I didn't see a bass thread, so I'm just posting in here. I recently got a bass guitar from my step-dad (it was his, but him and my mom are separating, and he left it with me). Where would I start to learn how to play?
The DSLs and TSLs can get some sharp sounds actually. I'd recommend the TSL cos it's got a lot of versatility and has a great rep.

Where would I start to learn how to play?
a bass is a type of guitar, you're fine posting here. there's tons of online resources about learning how to play bass. http://www.wikihow.com/Teach-Yourself-to-Play-Bass-Guitar that's a pretty decent page for getting your started. try to learn simple songs once you get the hang of how playing feels.
My DSL40c (Difference between this and DSL401 is EL34 instead of EL84 and a resonance knob instead of deep switch) sounds pretty damn great to me. It probably just had a shitty tone or bad recording. Try one out and see if you like it. I'd do a demo if I could figure out what mic in the garage would be best for this stuff.
Is it just me who desperately wants a Manson?

I release an album in a couple of days  Printing and burning cd's right now
I'm looking to play some easy Drop C songs. What do you guys like?
I think Thirty Three by The Ghost Inside is drop C
so after thinking this over instead of going for a combo amp, I'm going to get an Orange Dual Terror head and me and my dad are going to make a cabinet. he's experienced with woodwork and has tons of leftover wood in his shop and at his workplace(we're going to be using either oak or birch plywood). We're making a 2x12 and I'm looking at which speakers to get. Celestion V30s a bit too pricey and we're trying to keep the cost of the speakers <200. I heard the G10s are similar if just cheaper in production. Will there be a noticeable sound difference or would G10s sound fine?

Where would I start to learn how to play?
figure out for yourself the easiest way to position your fingers and the bass itself, a good posture is very important. search for some books online on how to play, theory is useful but not required for learning how to play if you want to skip the why and go directly to the actual playing just learn how to read tabs and search tabs for some easy songs
Don't be afraid to use a pick either, even though my fingerpicking is pretty good I still use a pick for certain songs because it produces a different twag than your fingers, anybody who tells you to never use a pick at all is a fucking clown and tell them to go fuck themselves. [editline]September 19, 2014[/editline] I never did post a picture of my bass when I bought it a while back. Nothing special, just a P-Bass Clone:
picked p-bass sounds heaps nice picked j-bass sounds hella cheez unless you really know what you are doing
I use a pick to play my bass because my fingers are made of balsa wood and anything I try to pluck sounds like someone playing with the drawstrings on the front of their sweatpants
Ideally you'd want to have the same level of control with both picking techniques but everyone has a tendency to lean towards one of the two (well there are more techniques to get sound out of a bass but that isn't the point here) Personally I prefer fingerpicking, but sometimes a song just isn't right unless it's played with a plectrum. I'm sure you could get the same sound or something identical with your fingers if you're skilled enough, but I know I'm not.
Anyone know any good wah pedals that do well for both guitar and bass? Also what differences can I expect with a pot wah compared to an optical and vice versa?
My baby c: [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/7msWJTM.jpg[/thumb] The signature is John Taylor's, from Duran Duran. I didn't varnish it for ages which is why it is faded. [editline]20th September 2014[/editline]
I didn't see a bass thread, so I'm just posting in here. I recently got a bass guitar from my step-dad (it was his, but him and my mom are separating, and he left it with me). Where would I start to learn how to play?
A few tips: Use your fingers rather than a plectrum, fingers are soooo much easier to use with a bass. Rest your thumb on a pickup or on the raised bit where the neck meets the body. The fifth note on every string, so the second one with a dot on it should sound the same as the next string along, so the fifth string on E should sound like A. The thick string is E, then A, then D, then G. Don't bother trying to play slap and pop if you are new, I tried it and I have been playing for years and it is fucking difficult (Anyone got any good guides on it?) Tab is easy once you realise what it means. Here is a basic tab: G|------1 D|-----1 A|----1 E|---1 That means you play the first note on each string, starting with E and going up to G. A zero means open, not pressing down on any notes. I hope I helped someone.
Another tip on playing: try both fingering and picking. I prefer fingering since I like the more physical feel of it but there's absolutely nothing wrong with picking. If you do finger and you're playing notes on your E string, rest your thumb on a pick-up. If you're on other strings, let your thumb rest on the string above it. To follow up on tab reading: -x- means you play a muted string. Rather than pressing it down on a fret, lay 2-3 fingers on top of it, you get a nice percussive note out of it. G-22-x-44-x-55--2 As you can see in this case, you play these percussive notes inbetween regular notes. Now look at this: E--0-2--2/14-| That 2/14 is a slide. You hit E string second fret and immediately slide down all the way to the 14th fret. Here's how you'd play that. You also might spot hs and ps in tabs in the same format as slides. They're hammer-ons and pull-offs respectively. Consider this note. D----4p2------- You play it by putting a finger on D string 4th fret and another on D string 2nd fret. You hit the note , let it ring for a brief moment and pull off your finger from the 4th fret, causing a fluent transition to the higher note. Hammer-ons work the same way but in reverse. This one, for instance: D----2h4------- Hit the D string 2nd fret, let it ring for a brief moment and press another finger onto the 4th fret or hammer it on. Like pull-offs, they'll cause a fluent transition to the lower note.
this is entirely subjective [editline]20th September 2014[/editline] picked bass sounds better anyway
Picking is harder though, it's better to learn an easy method first.
Picking is harder though, it's better to learn an easy method first.
This is subjective I cannot play properly with my fingers at all, even after years of playing.
I find it harder to play across multiple strings with a pick, but if I'm all over the place fingers are cool. I honestly think it's preference and the situation you're in.
Picking is harder though, it's better to learn an easy method first.
what's true for you may not be for the next person [editline]20th September 2014[/editline] ultimately it comes down to what style of music you want to play
Is the Orange Micro Terror and the Orange PPC108 any good?

ha base technique
I just punch my bass and add some highs to the EQ that sounds like slap to me. Jokes aside, slap bass might be the coolest thing to me in a mix. I actually only recorded one song with real clean slap bass as low register bass on all of my albums which is this one: the other slap basses on that album are all distorted and gritty but nothing beats a real slap bass. I don't record them often tho because it's quite alot of work and working with trilian (bass vst) leaves you with more time to songwrite.
I already posted this in maker's mates but i figured you guys would like it. anyway i built my first guitar from scratch over the summer. It's a 3 piece Mahogany body with a maple neck and rosewood fretboard. I finished it with Tru-Oil which i really recommend. Great stuff! Strat type single coil in the neck and a ibanez humbucker in the bridge. Push/Pull pots on both volume and tone controls series/parallel mode on the humbucker and out of phase. I'm really happy with the results. It came out much better than i expected and it plays like a dream.
I like that headstock it's funky [editline]21st September 2014[/editline] the les paul shape looks best when it's barebones like that too
