how to mic up a drumkit the little donny way
step 1:

step 2: no
"So what you doing this weekend?"
"Micing up a drumkit."
With some drummers that is literally the case for even smaller kits, sometimes even senselessly. For example we brought in a local kid from a metal band who only had a 6 piece drumset with a 2 crash one ride and one china setup. Pretty typical, so we go and start setting up mics in a general position and have him start playing. He starts waving his hands to get our attention and starts saying he wants more slap in his kick drum, very typical of modern music. So I go out and move the mic a little closer to the beater head and then go back into the control room. He starts playing again and before long he was waving his arms again saying he wanted even more slap, so we start EQ'ing the kick drum to add more slap. Before long most of the lows or completely gone and all that is left is this harsh overpowering kick sound, but it's alright because it's his sound.
So finally we think we are ready and we roll tape and signal for him to play. He stops about 30 seconds in and says he wants more china, and for us it was already too loud so we bring him into the control room to listen to what we are hearing to see if maybe it's just the headphones. It wasn't, so we move the overhead a little more towards the china and start again. I really wish I could grab that take off the tape and post it because in the end all you could hear was this harsh sounding double kick pattern and the china he was beating to hell. Honestly every other drum was so far back in the mix they were pretty much inaudible.
At the end of this process including the 10 minutes of tape we actually recorded the process took about 5 hours... And the end result would make even the most brutal of metal head (Darkslicer) shivers in his boots.
Is it bad I feel like buying one of those chinese 4003 basses off Aliexpress for fun

Hey, at least you won't have to worry about Neil Peart being an insufferable cunt who thinks he knows best.

Hell with all the time he has spent in the studio he would be telling me which mics and where to put them at this point.

"Right, this mic and this mic aren't right."
"But Mr Peart, I'm the sound engine-"
"This mic. And this mic. Not right."

Yep...
my last assignment in this workshop thing that i'm in was to write and record a song so i did. it's instrumental thrash metal or something. was supposed to have vocals but i'm no vocalist, not yet. the mixing and sound quality are semi crap but whatever
the drums and bass are synthetic ProTools stuff

Oh my fucking god. I hate people like that, I can't stand it. I had stuff like this happening with my band in the studio but what happened to me was minimal and un-important in comparison to that...
Nazareth I know this might sound hard but expect to get alot of such people, musicians are often stupid not knowing assholes who don't listen to the best mans advice at all because they all think this type of advice is "OPINION". People like that don't get the full picture, don't get anything at all because it's their "craft" and their "opinion" against your professionalism and knowledge.
Argueing with such people is on par with argueing with conspiracy theorists or whatever.

Hahaha nazareth I made a joke disco edm type mix/master on a little track thing I did which fits so well to that.
Guys let me present you the possible soundwise result of nazareths story (I call it MODERN DJENT MIXES LEL):

Yep kind of like that, Being a musician I understand the "It's my signature sound" idea. Problem is most people develop their sound to what works live in most cases. In the studio things are a bit more controlled and accurate so you can't distract people with volume. If your treble is set too high it's gonna show up in the recording and it will audibly punch you in the face.
My professor was telling me that he had guys who would come in and have all their amps set and the drums tuned and if he noticed anything wrong they would refuse to change it. It's an absolute nightmare in a studio because if someone won't turn their mids up then you have to go in post and EQ the track and that doesn't always work.
I guess the takeaway from this is that if you're going into the studio expect that the sound that you hear coming out of your instrument will not sound like the sound you hear in the control room. You pay an engineer not only to press buttons but to make you sound good, it's all well to throw out a suggestion in the control room but if the engineer says no or tries it and to him it sounds like crap then it probably won't fly. And the sound most musicians want to hear as they get older is the worse, all those years of live shows and their ears are probably shot so they want more highs and volume.
But I love what I am doing, it's a great experience in the end.
Man another great set at my teachers gig, I would say even better than last time. Everyone was on the ball tonight, Peter Rivera was on the bongos and vocals again tonight but not long into the set he jumped back on the drums where he sounds best. Fucking guy was laying it down BIG time, honestly I am hooked on these guys.
Wish I could have gotten some video but my cell takes some horrible video so here is a blurry photo I was able to take before some drunk chick who is old enough to be my mom bumped into me and then proceeded to grind her ass all over me (no thanks...)

So happy I get to spend the next 2 years with this guy at school, he is a great guy as well as an incredibly talented pianist.

He just never plays it because he prefers Gibson, pretty sure he paid double and it's in splendid condition I believe. Gonna have a look at it soon ,what should I look out for??? so I make sure I'm getting a good deal

check the neck, make sure each fret sounds a note properly etc.
always gotta check that kind of shit when buying second hand
sounds like a pretty good deal tho
I accidentally wrote he doesnt play it because he prefers Gibson, I meant he prefers his Fender. I think it's in a very good state. Just dusty and a new set of strings and we're good to go I believe. Thanks for the advice.
Muse is only 3 dudes, but there is no band on Earth that can replicate their live sound.
Muse is my favorite band, their live shows are the best thing ever in the world. I was gonna see them a few years ago but Matt Bellamy broke his foot by playing with his dog and the show got cancelled ;(
Could you get a picture of it?
just make sure everything works and check the neck joint and the headstock for cracks
He hasnt been home for a while, we're both at seperate boarding schools. I'll meet up with him soon though, he lives 100 meters away from me and is a good friend of mine, so I'm almost sure that he's practically letting me steal this guitar from him. I'll update when I go to his house, probably next month.
Hoooly craaap.
Played my first song on stage last night infront of 150 people, it was great. I also got to play my new Vintage Modified Jaguar bass. So nice. Got it for £120 off my dads friend, absolute bargain, seen them go for £300 before.
Anyone here try the Dragon's Heart guitar picks? I heard they're pretty good and I'm thinking about getting a pack of them. I wanna try them mostly because I hear they last really long and I'm getting tired of my picks wearing down after two weeks of play.
first proper gig coming in four days so hyped
I've been playing on a Yamaha acoustic and Sterling by Music Man bass for about a year now, but now I need an electric guitar in my collection.
So for my first electric guitar I've been looking at Epiphone, Squier, and Ibanez. Up to $300 is my preferred price range but I'm willing to go a bit over, I will not exceed $400 however.
After looking around online, these are the ones that I liked the best in order from top to bottom:
Epiphone Les Paul Standard
Squier Classic Vibe 50's Telecaster & Stratocaster
Squier Vintage Modified Telecaster & Stratocaster
Squier Vintage Modified Jazzmaster & Jaguar
I would like to go check out all of these at a store in a day or so, can anyone offer any comments on these choices? I'm also completely clueless when it comes to Ibanez guitars, can someone recommend me some models that offer similar performance to these at a similar price?

My bands first real gig is going to be a big bandcontest in germany that only a few bands get choosen to participate in round one. 28 February, we got 30 minutes and we will "fight" against other "metal" bands with a jury and public voting... I need to add that all local bands around suck ass and sound like every other band, especially in the metal genre.
Also we already organized 5 gigs in march-may 2015, exciting year coming in  Also my first ever official gig will be wireless for me, don't know if it can get any better for a first real time.
I need to add that all local bands around suck ass and sound like every other band, especially in the metal genre.
sounds an awful lot like the situation we're in, when it comes to speed/thrash anyway
[editline]25th November 2014[/editline]
our bunch is currently looking at 2 confirmed gigs and three possible ones, two of which we will get almost surely. we're planning to blow most of the modern "thrash" acts out of the country and our sound is different enough to do just that i'm sure
we're currently working on a short demo, i'll post that shit here when it's done if peeps have any interest
makin a song
not finished with it yet
