This guitar is an early 60's model by Kawai whose name isn't known by the internet. It is not incredibly rare though and they're like many of the 60's Japanese guitars, they're very hit or miss. Most of them are what you'd call 'slide guitars' simply because the action is so ridiculous that slide is all they're useful for. If the neck angle is okay though you can get a decent player out of it, but it will take some work. For $40 + the labor to get it back in playing condition, I'd say it's worth it. It's missing some parts obviously.
Here's a video and sound demo of it

I don't think that has to do with the number of frets, I think that's because of the location of the neck joint and bridge being different. Like how Les Pauls and SGs have the same scale length and the same 22 frets, but the neck joins the body of an SG at the 22nd fret so the bridge is much farther forward on an SG, which makes it seem like the neck is longer when it is in fact in a different position.
So yeah if you hold the two guitars the same way, your hands will be in a different position.
that's not a kawai, the headstock and neck plate are both wrong
that's not a kawai, the headstock and neck plate are both wrong
I've seen both the headstock and the 5 bolt neckplate on kawai guitars, but I'm mostly going by the pickup design, I'm pretty sure that's a kawai pickup.
But I've mentioned this before last time someone asked about one of these 60's japanese guitars, the brand name really doesn't matter and is often times ambiguous since they often share certain design characteristics. Remember that Kawai made guitars to be shipped out and rebranded under at least 100 different names so there's nothing on there that's supposed to say kawai.
I still think that's a korean design.
I am more of a headphones guy, I haven't dropped money on a good pair of headphones for a while but the last pair I owned were the Audio-Technica ATH-M50. If you wanna go with headphones I suggest trying them out. Probably the best headphones I have owned for recording in that price range before that I owned a cheaper pair of AKG phones (don't remember the model) but they sounded really scooped.
The AT headphones were an amazing difference, and they are built pretty tough too. I take care of my stuff but they were around my toddlers cousins and took quite a few drops and never broke, never got a short in the cable or anything. I need to get more into monitors though, only reason I haven't got any is because I live in an apartment and my downstairs neighbor keeps her fat fucking ear pressed against the ceiling.
M50s would be a downgrade for me. I use a set of modified DT 770s for isolation and some ATH-A700s. If I end up not buying new monitors I'd be spending about the same amount on a pair of HD 650s to fill their role, since I need something more accurate for mixing anyway.
I'm really getting in to the classics of basses. P, J and Stingray. I've got a P, my Kramer is essentially a budget Stingray (sounds like it anyway), and I really want a goddamn Jazz. One of the new Affinity ones in Lake Placid Blue. Get a high mass bridge on it and maybe some SD Hot for Jazz pups too. Complete tonal versatility in 3 basses.
Look at this fucking thing.

Hell yeah, if you have the money then go for it.

I still want this thing...

I love the P/J pickup configuration, and recently I finally got to play one and man it plays just as good as it looks.
It's either that or this Fender P bass.

the bass I have was free, it was also missing a few parts and not working
I went to get it fixed and they told me it was probably 30+ years old, which is pretty cool
it's not the best though. it's from a brazilian brand that's pretty meh nowadays, but apparently the bass I have is from the time they made decent instruments
Good thing I hadn't bought anything yet. Apparently, some new Vintage Modifieds are coming up. Seen all these in a post on Talkbass.

I'm really digging that P with the thundertron
I had no idea jazz IIIs were so tiny
but they're great
I'm really digging that P with the thundertron
I like the olympic white with tortoise pickguard, I was always a sucker for that color scheme. Not sure if I would ever need a 5 string bass though.

I still have a few jazz III picks laying around, I used them for the longest time but I went and picked up my yellow tortex and now I am stuck on those again. I got my father hooked on the jazz pick though.
[editline]9th July 2013[/editline]
Actually I still have a couple stuck to the headstock of my Ibanez...
I tried jazz IIIs once after seeing an article in a magazine about them. I didn't like them
I tried jazz IIIs once after seeing an article in a magazine about them. I didn't like them
I have to try out the XL verison my biggest problem was it was so small I would be slamming my fingers on the strings all the time and it was a cause for a lot of bloodshed. I liked how they sounded and felt but as of late I feel like I have more control with the tortex picks.
I didn't like how stiff they were
I didn't like how stiff they were
Yeah that is another reason why I went back to the .73mm tortex, when I am picking hard I kind of need a pick that gives or I am always playing sharp. I was using a .60 for a while.
my pick of choice is Alice .58s, they're incredibly flexible. their .81s have the same sort of rigidity as a red tortex
I didn't like how stiff they were
yeah if I could find one that's the shape of the jazz III but the same flex as a dunlop nylon .73mm that'd be perfect
my pick of choice is Alice .58s, they're incredibly flexible. their .81s have the same sort of rigidity as a red tortex
Yeah the softest I go is .60 although I have .60mm dunlops and I hate them. The EVH picks I have feel much better because they have a grip to them and it makes the pick just a little bit thicker where you grip it which just sits better in my fingers.

how do I play open G tuning?
I've got some slide lick going on and it sounds great but I need a good learning source.
Totally sold on DR strings, I can hold Drop Ab with 60s on 24.75" scale, without the strings being unplayably floppy, even though they buzz quite a bit if i strum too hard.
The tension in drop B is nice. Also this duncan custom sounds fucking wicked.
Breaking away from theory and writing without the use of scales and modes to me is one of the most rewarding experiences when it comes to writing.
another one of the new Squiers apparently

fuck you Squier why do you do everything I want when I can't afford anything

this fucking thing

damn
looks like what people from the 60's would think futuristic guitars would look like
When I see one of these 4 string j basses I always get Ћ urge to put hard distortion on it and rumble dirty riffs. Fuck progressive metal, what have you done to me!

That looks like it weighs a ton.
I tried jazz IIIs once after seeing an article in a magazine about them. I didn't like them
I love the point on them and I'm super fond of rigidity (I mean, christ, I have two metal picks and some acrylic horror) but I need the back end of the pick to give me any sort of control because my hands are huge.
If they made 1.5mm Max Grips with the Jazz III point I'd never use anything else.

No, no... No. You will use the word "The" motherfucker! :v:

The worst part of that is, it's a letter. Tshe can't mean "the" any more than somebody can decide ñ means potato.
