Open up the electronics cavity with the guitar plugged in and start wiggling wires, could be something to do with the actual pickup but you need to troubleshoot first. Go through and wiggle each wire and if you reach one that starts cutting out when you wiggle it then resolder it and see if that fixes it for ya.
I just did this. In the back cavity and both cavities where the pickups are. Nothing made a difference. I guess it';s the pickup. Whatever. It's only an epiphone sg, and the bridge pickup still works fine.
Is it like this.

Or this.

Either design should allow you to knock it out by hitting either side so it comes out from the side.
Similar to the fender, but the nut is much lower and the wood much higher on the headstock side of things. I'll give it a try, I have nothing to lose but a currently unplayable instrument.

If you are really sure you can probably pick up a cheap replacement on ebay, or just do what Phil X would do, just rip it out and throw a hot wheels in it's place.

It's worth a try, it's pretty hard to damage the nut that way so don't be afraid to give it a good whack.
Managed to tap it out slowly by flicking a flathead screwdriver. Looks like it's arts and crafts time at the Shogun household. Ran to Kroger to grab some Elmer's Superglue and set off.
Used an old school ID card to shim, tested it with the nut and it looks to be at about the right height. Using my trusty X-acto knife, I scored it on both sides and applied glue sparingly. Here's to hoping it works!
Thanks for the advice Nazareth

I have a few guitars, not too expensive, but i usually try to personalize them in some way. (Sorry for crap picture, its 1 am and the lighting is terrible in this room)
From left to right: 3/4th size guitar with sharpie doodles and shit on it, A banjo with six strings (I guess it qualifies as a guitar?), A guitar with peace written in various languages, swirling around the laser cut peace symbol. A purple guitar I bought from a friend (I don't know much about it, but it has a blues kind of tone to it), The first electric i ever got which is some cheap ibanez, and then my first guitar, which I drew all over with markers and had clearcoated so it doesn't fade off.
Also, you can kind of see my ukulele and keyboard.

My band's EP is finished. I have listened to it and it sounds so good. Holy FUCK. I'll see if I can get some samples up at some point on Soundcloud or something.

do it, give give give.
I don't personally have any software to do it so I'll see if my drummer can do it since he does virtual instrument productions.
this is his virtually conducted album. it was made with protools, virtual instruments and a regular QWERTY keyboard and a mouse. no physical instruments used.

So Shogun, did the nut shim fix work?
Saw Mastodon at Mayhem the other day, I wanna learn every song on the Hunter like second nature.

Yes it did. I appreciate the advice.
EMG pups I still need to decide if I like. I think I do...
[editline]31st July 2013[/editline]
Also bonus review of this squier jazz I just found at this girl's house
Nice action and a fast neck combined with good sounding pups makes for both a great value and a good bass regardless of cost. The bridge is pretty low mass though and feels cheap but I played it for like 2 minutes so whatever

not too sure when we'll have it up for download but it will be soon
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/washburn-wd-20s-dreadnought-acoustic-guitar
Thinking of this as a replacement for my mitchell md100. i like the solid top as well as the rosewood sides, and any acoustic/electric will just be trading electronics for quality at that level, what do you guys think?
Alternatively, this (even though i just said electronics detract from quality) looks good too. i also like the upper fret access.
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/washburn-wd-10sce-cutaway-acoustic-electric-guitar
And you can push it through a podhd and get metal tones out of it. i did that one time to my friends acoustic.
How good practice are backing tracks?
Having fun with a blues minor scale and some backing tracks :v:
More fun/useful than a metronome IMO, it gives you something to build off of instead of 100% improv
Backing tracks worked for me, they're really good for practicing scales and improvisation.
Really great for helping your playing become more fluid aswell.
