After a seventeen hour drive I finally get to play it. Also it is an Ibanez RGR421EXFM
Definitely worth the seventeen hour drive. That thing is sexy.
If you switched to a different gauge string recently, it's probably that the nut slots aren't cut to the right size for those strings.
I've had the same gauge for a long time in the same tuning

Ibanez have the most ridiculous model names.
Pretty, how much did you get it for? When I googled it most of the prices ranged from 450-600 dollars.
The guitar itself was $225. The case also came with it.

Lucky you. Love good deals.

Could anyone give me a valuation or any detailed information on a Samick HF-650 TSB?
http://sybmac.tripod.com/private/Samick/Catalog/jazz1.htm
This is about all I could find. Someone might want to trade me one for a decent solid state amp I have, but I'd rather just keep the amp if it's not a fair value trade.
Just bought my first 7 string, here's a link to some pics: http://imgur.com/a/5Zlni#0
I'm really happy with it, and I'm adjusting pretty quickly from 6 to 7 string.
I'll be making a demo video of some sort soon so I'll post that at a later date.

I personally learned on early Tremonti stuff, the Eagles (my Dad's favourite band, so I had plenty of albums to pick and chose from), Godsmack, Linkin Park, and several mixed country songs from the mid aughts.
Later I mixed the same artists with more complicated Tremonti riffs, some easier Metallica, Poets of the Fall, and really anything else that was a different style from how I played that gave me troubles like SRV, Slash's stuff, and other popular 80s/90s rock.
Currently I mostly write and work on techniques and warmups, though I tend to learn small riff segments from songs I like that I never really learned before.

black sabbath and nirvana were the first 2 bands i learned songs for.
if you're looking to down tune below drop d (which you really shouldn't as a beginner) electric wizard and acid bath tunes (or basically any other doom or sludge band) are really easy and fun to jam to
edit: also andrew jackson jihad, neutral milk hotel, and paul baribeau are easy.
edit2: and a lot of popular rock songs are easy if you exclude the solos (even some of those are easy).
(which you really shouldn't as a beginner)
why
So anyone have recommendations for songs to learn as a beginner?
the beatles, cheesy as fuck but youll learn lots of different simple chords and what certain tonalities sound like quickly. not to mention youll never have prob finding a tab
why
Because it helps to get an ear for standard tuning so that when you do tune down you can compare the sounds and still have a feel for where you can go (so it's easier to learn another tuning).
Any tips on picking out the notes on the bass in a song? I really like the bass in Is Tropical's "Dancing Anymore", I've got a few parts of it worked out, but I can't pick out the bass on the chorus, it sounds like he's playing the intro then the verse in it but I'm not sure.

Nevermind I looked up a live performance, the bass was turned up real loud. A lot of it was synth bass, but I figured it out.

You could try learning Snowblind by Black Sabbath, it has mixture of power chords, basic chords like C and D, some scales too, song is played in C# but you can easily play it even in Standard E tuning, it might be slightly difficult at first but it's worth it.
I just learned the intro riff of She is well and nothing can be ill by Glass Cloud
might throw up a video someday, it's a really cool tapping part
why
generally skews your view of the fretboard. as soon as your comfortable in standard and drop d, drop tune all you want.
why
That mentality is that people who start out with lower tunings may play songs that rely heavily on open chords (See open D5 for Tremonti, the standard Open C power for Rambola/Erna, or the E power for Hetfield) and they will begin to get used to the lower tones for their open strings when they shouldn't. Also music theory... but does anyone starting out actually learn music theory, and then how to play (excluding any previous instrument users, in which case obviously that's different)?
is there an echo in here
but yeah that makes sense though I spent more of my time in D standard when I was first learning than not and I never ran into any issues

I hate floyd roses with a passion because of my 6 string. It's not so bad, but i feel like i'd rather have a string through instead. I had that same guitar i'm pretty sure a while back and i just got tired and sold it.

Figured to put my guitar hero skills to the test learning this song, since it seems like the highest fret they go to is 7.
As an opine, i would recommend at least learning in D if you want the best of both worlds. I did that, and i found it a lot more helpful in the long run for songs i play.
that song is hilarious

holy fuck that last breakdown ahaha
