"Waiting"? You mean "Heading For Tomorrow", right?
Wouldn't call that a good starting point. Like you said, it reminds one very much of Queen. I think "Land of the Free Pt.1" would be a much better choice. Text book Power Metal!
I also recall hearing Kai Hansen in an interview saying that people curious of the band should listen to the song "Into the Storm" as it best exemplifies Gamma Ray.
My mistake lol. I blanked a bit as far as the name of album goes.
I dunno. I think it really showcases all of the best elements of Power Metal. There's the fast and heavy, yet anthemic, "LIVE! LIFE! EAAAAA-SY!" of "Lust For Life," then you have the uplifting and simply epic "Heaven Can Wait," followed by the hilarious (and blazing fast) "Money." It has everything IMO.
But then again I haven't listened to quite as much Power Metal as you so I'll trust you with this one lol.
I am a fair Power Metal fan already (Take a look at my last.fm) - but thanks for the suggestion anyway. I've not tried Gamma Ray yet.
Firewind is starting to grow on me a bit. Really quite like Head Up High.
I'm seeing a lot more symphonic power metal on your page. I think Gamma Ray is on the other side of the spectrum of Power Metal, which I think would prove interesting for you to look into.
I like Powerplant and Somewhere out in space, probably among my favourite albums of any kind actually.
don't know if this has been posted or not; but yeah, Edguy has gone downhill, but then Tobias Samnet did a load of solo project stuff under "Avantasia" which is pretty fantastic, e.g

also, again, don't know if anyone has posted this or not, but Lost Horizon is power metal afaik

Symphony X is pretty much a cross of progressive, power, and symphonic metal
All in one
Which is why I call them sex for the ears.

Black metal is the easiest to write songs for. I've already written a few short ones.

What? Kill, glorious murder, and Satan? That's the stereotypical 3 things people think about when you mention Black Metal. However, I enjoy Dimmu Borgir.

Here's a new band from France called Qantice (what the hell does that mean?). They call their music "Movie Metal" but it really is just Symphonic/Progressive Power Metal (think late Rhapsody). I think they've got alot of potential.
Here's a trailer for their album "The Cosmocinesy" (2:12 :3:):

And this is my favourite song, "Megantrop":

Wow, Qantice is pretty awesome.

I used to listen to power metal when I was younger, but reflecting on those days I can't understand why I did. To me, power metal is something that appeals to people who aren't satisfied with their life and have an extra urge to engulf themselves in some type of fantasy world. I also view people who continue to read Harry Potter, Narnia, and novels like these into their 20s-30s to be of the same caliber.

That's a real stretch to be honest.
I recently discovered Stratovarius, and now I see they are in OP
Really awesome.

I don't engulf myself in the world. I'm perfectly happy with my life, and I certainly don't shrink back into the world of the music at the expense of this one. It's just good music.

I don't listen to it to escape from anything. I just listen to power metal because I think it's amazing.

Okay so my brother is gonna get me a cd for Christmas and I would like a list of some amazing albums so he can maybe find one.
I have:
Sonata Arctica - For the Sake of Revenge
Sonata Arctica - Paid in Full (EP)
Sonata Arctica - Reckoning Night
Sonata Arctica - The Days of Grays
Sonata Arctica - The Last Amazing Grays (EP)
Sonata Arctica - Unia
Apparently these are the shit ones but I like them. Could anyone recommend some for him to get?

Uhh... if you like Sonata, then their first albums Ecliptica and Silence are really superior in my opinion.
Other bands and albums that sound like SA are:

Altaria - Divinity

Axenstar - Far From Heaven

Dreamtale - Ocean's Heart and Difference

Insania - Fantasy

Stratovarius - Visions and Infinite

Timeless Miracle - Into the Enchanted Chamber
There's also this Japanese band called Balflare. Their album Sleeping Hollow just screams Sonata Arctica. But good luck finding that.. it's really ultra-rare. Infact, most of these albums are very rare to find in a physical shop. Your best bet would be to just look for Sonata Arctica's earlier work or maybe some stuff by Stratovarius.
Apparently these are the shit ones
Not at all. Depends on your personal taste.
If I were you, I really would look into the older Sonata Arctica stuff. Reckoning Night is really where they started to change. Of the others, I would probably recommend Ecliptica or Winterheart's Guild to get first. At least check them out on iTunes or something. If you don't like them, fair enough.
Assuming you have no other power metal, try out Blind Guardian's 'A Twist in the Myth', and something from Stratovarius.
Rad McCool knows this stuff far better than I do. And I'll probably be checking out a few from his list.
SA is a pretty shitty band. New album is terrible. One out of every ten songs are great.
Ehh... Im getting a CD on christmas, but Im not really sure what should I get. Anyone want to recommend something? I mostly listen to bands like Altaria, Stratovarius, Dream Theater (a bit proggy), Sonata Arctica, Gamma Ray and Firewind.
Haven't seen anyone mention Stormwarrior yet:

Get Gamma Ray's Land of the Free Pt. 1 or Somewhere Out In Space if you haven't gotten those already! True genre definers.

Winterheart's guild is pretty awesome, I would get it if you can.
I've been listening to The Scarecrow by Avantasia recently. Alot of good songs to be found on it.
