I'm a huge fan of Hard Bob and Jazz Fusion.
The most notable artists I regularly listen to would be Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Maynard Ferguson, and of course as a drummer, Dave Weckl.
I've been studying jazz harmony recently, and some of the stuff that these musicians came up with is just unbelievable

Being able to take a close look at stuff like this really blows my mind

Giant steps is probably one of the hardest songs to improvise a solo over, but Coltrane could do it with his hands behind his back.

I've been meaning to check him out for a while, any suggestions for albums to start with?
out to lunch is his definitive album. Live at the Five Spot, Out There, and Iron Man are all terrific after that.
he's also sideman on a lot of great stuff:
with coltrane - village vanguard, impressions, africa/brass
andrew hill - point of departure
oliver nelson - blues and the abstract truth
charles mingus - live at antibes, mingus mingus mingus mingus mingus
george russell - ezz-thetics. really complex mind blowing album, this guy (earlier) basically started modal jazz apparently.

Probably because he played like 11 hours a day.
Here's some cool balkan jazz.

Lol, Hard Bob.
Hard Bop.
This is a documentary about Chet Baker who is my favourite musician of any genre.

He led a very interesting life.
The reason he's my favourite musician is down to the way he played the trumpet, but more about how he sang. His voice soothes me like no other
I like Baker, his personality comes through with a lot of sorrow in his voice. Plus it's very soothing.

I agree about the sorrow, especially as he got older and less popular. If you watch the documentary it's incredible seeing him go from looking like this

damn it i've already spoken about that.
that's not free-form jazz, that's fusion, totally different!!
Panthalassa arrived :D Ripping now
Nice. Play it loud. :-)
Ohh and I figured out the FLAC ripping bit :D
Yeah at first you feel like crap for having no clue, but once you do it a few times with a Log and stuff, it turns out to be easy as piss.
But DBPoweramp is the easiest converter by far to use.
This is some nice jaaaaazz

He played this at Martin Luther Kings funeral.

Thank you for this thread OP, I've been meaning to get into Jazz, I just didn't know how. Can't wait to just listen to a load of Jazz albums and chill the fuck out. I haven't heard much of jazz music as of yet, but it seems to have an effect on me no other kind of music does.
Also Saxophones kick ass.
Just because it's not listened to enough

I'm a lot into mixed Jazz genres lately and I found this band.
They make Jazz/Swing/Metal kind of music, check it out.

I'm happy there's actually a Jazz thread. I don't come into the Music section much (see: never) and I'm already pleased that I came.
Can someone find me some Jazz like the one from Portal 2?
