I'm not very much into purely instrumental Jazz but if you don't mind vocals, Candy Dulfer makes some amazing Jazz:

I don't think that my brain is capable of absorbing that much avant garde, all brain cells will probably just end up committing suicide.
Not been hearing much lounge-style jazz these days, will have to get more. :)

Hehe, it's one of those records where you have to flow with the crazy or lose.

Recorded late on my Fender Rhodes, improvised with a basic structure I had in mind.

i have something to admit...
i've been underwhelmed by Kind of Blue ever since I first listened to it. I know it's intricately composed and wonderfully recorded, but the fact that I've had vastly better experiences by a LOT of his other music just pushes that album back a bit..
I'm listening to:

love it already.

I listened to Milestones a lot before I heard Kind of Blue, and I was actually a bit disappointed. Milestones is one of my all time favorite album, and it's pretty much perfect from start to end.

I remember hearing the whole album being played when I was at a steakhouse in Arizona. That was a fun dinner.

Also, you might want to check out some of the things Garland and Trane did together, some of it is rather good. http://open.spotify.com/track/1WDmkqYTgbSQj1VAF9HSNe
I'll never figure out why Kind of Blue is propped up as the greatest. It's just a simple lounge jazz record to me, far from his best and even further from the best of that particular style of jazz... John Coltrane surpassed him on that front imo.
[editline]21st October 2012[/editline]
recently listened to:

so good.
I can see why you guys aren't fans, imo its not the greatest - but it is the most accessible and the easiest to replicate, hence so many songs on Kind of Blue are now standards, like So What, and it did lay the blue print for modal jazz.
I think looking back it's easier to appreciate his other works, but kind of blue was pretty groundbreaking. It was a theoretical framework for modal jazz, basically
It's one of those times when you can appreciate it's compositional legacy, but not the actual experience.
I did hear it yesterday and Freddie Freeloader followed by Blue In Green kind of blue me away. :-)
Time for some good old Jan Johansson

So nice to listen to during the cold transition of autumn to winter. All the leaves have fallen, it's cold and grey everywhere.
Listening to this while walking alone through a park is a nice feeling.
I've always viewed Kind of Blue as a good album to start listening to jazz - for me it's right between Ellington's 4 minute power shuffles and Coletrane's 25 minute modal madness. Interesting, yet not too complicated. But in the end I find Miles to be a bit overrated.
Nevertheless, some music for you. Being a drummer myself, I am required by law to listen to Art Blakey, and this record is interesting - Blakey, another two drummers (one being Philly Joe Jones), seven Latino percussionists, a piano, bass and a trumpet :v:

there's a case to call his standard modal things overrated but not his fusion.. oh no. :)
This entire album is gold.

If you cut out the creepy tracks (15-22), its quite an awesome jazz album.
