On average, its a pretty good community. Most posters are fairly educated.

Official forums for just about anything are really bad.
I go to somethingawful forums for like 5 minutes and its pretty awful (plus the whole layout of the forums just hurts my eyes...)

You guys may joke that Facepunch has a lot of idiots but I seriously do reckon we're a lot more educated than other popular forums. If you go somewhere else it's usually hard to have a proper discussion because of shit posters or 10 word replies.
I remember a friend of mine made a typical "x vs y who would win?" video game thread in a forum which I forget awhile ago and it had 80 pages of "lol x would win" "y would kick x's ass". Only occasionally there would be a proper post worth reading.

most forums are filled to the brim with content-heavy posts. Facepunch has a sort of hit-and-run posting style that's very prevalent, especially in older members
Even a its least active, facepunch is more populated than most other forums.
I've been wanting to move to the Something Awful forums for quite a while, as it's much more mature and higher quality than Facepunch. I just don't wan't to commit to the fee, as I feel joining a forum should be free.
I'm going to start advertising Facepunch.
