I doubt there's any laws that mean people can't help out in an investigation - just evidence obtained illegal is obviously inadmissible in a US court.

wtf? Police can't find out who owns a number? What kind of police work is that? How hard can it be? Ask the fucking telephone company. Don't you have a site you can just punch in the number and see who owns it if it's not a "secret" number. Here in Norway we have a couple of websites that have all listed numbers in Norway. If you type in a number, you get the name of the person listed on the number and his/her address. Or you can do it the opposite way of course.

I wouldn't be surprised if those are just numbers of people who keep prank calling the OP or something, and he's using us to figure out who they are. If this were really a police matter about arresting a murderer, you think his dad would have maybe specified "don't tell the whole internent about our investigation"
