I find that hard to believe, you'd have to shoot a lot of rounds in a relatively small amount of time, and that would scare the buffalo away wouldn't it? and the fact that they mostly had muzzle loaders back then
That's what I was thinking too. I don't know too much about 1800's firearms though. I know the time period we were talking about was 1860-1890.
Then again, this comes from the same person who said if women ran the world there would be no wars.
Edited to say this was also a college professor from California.
Only gun around then that could do that was the gatling and at the very end the Maxim, which had a water filled shroud to keep the barrel cool.

in the 19th century, boltactions were just starting to become prevalent (mosin nagant for example)
Help me Oh Mighty Facepunch Gun Thread, for I am indecisive. Do I spring for an 1860 Army (Pietta Repro $239 on Cabela's) or an 1858 New Model Army (Pietta Repro for $179 on Cabela's). I can't decide...

almost as bad as when my highschool History teacher didnt know where the D-Day invasion took place. I had to teach the entire class...

Most common rifles then were the :1873 Springfield Trapdoor, and the Henry Repeating rifle. The Henry could (Possibly) do that... but it would be impossible action would go before barrel. So basically your teacher is a feminist liberal commy prick.

Don't for get the Colt-Browning M1895 aka The Potato Digger.
I am in need of FP's vast knowledge on firearms during the 19th century.
My English teacher today was talking about buffalo in the western plains, and how in 5 years Americans killed nearly 10 million buffalos in 5 years. She then says that buffalo hunters would shoot so much in one session that their barrels would get so hot that they would bend and start to melt.
Is there any truth to that? I've never heard of it before.
Not feasible without sustained automatic fire.
Entirely possible if the barrels were all shit and they were shooting really hot loads really quickly but so incredibly unlikely that it's not even reasonable to mention the possibility.
I regularly shoot a thousand rounds per plinking session and I've never had a barrel melt. If I was killing a thousand buffalo a session I could easily do the 10 million buffalo on my own. I could easily do 1,825,000 in 5 years if I was shooting that many.
Not possible without sustained fully automatic fire.

or possibly a 20000 round capacity and someone who can work a bolt really fast
Maybe they hunted with Gatling guns, that's quite possible.

Basically, I also forgot to mention she is crazy. She lived on an Indian reservation for 8 years and always talks about how great it was to live in a house made of mud, despite the local Indians being so mad at her that they would frequently harass her with guns and kill cats to hang outside her door.
Anyways, I guess I'm getting a bit off topic. Have a picture:

why on earth would anyone hunt with a gatling gun? aiming a gatling gun is terrible there's no way they ever landed any shots
Why would you return a mag just because you don't want an odd number? That doesn't really make sense to me.
1) I spent more than I should have so I need to get some of the money back. I'm 99% sure that the price tag on the fucking M&P was $340 when I first looked at it, but I didn't want to argue with the guy about it since I like him so I just made a comment on it when I bought it when it said $440
2) I'm really OCD and I fucking hate odd numbers of things. Shit has to be divisible by 2 or 5 and it fucks with my head if I have something that isn't. It really fucking does.
3) It doesn't hold all 25 rounds anyway and the others do
4) Fuck
not holding all the rounds isn't that big a deal but if it's having problems now it'll probably not feed right or something in the future.
Yeah also the other two options.
Really the "It doesn't hold all 25 rounds" like I said before is a coincidence. I was going to return it before then but it just adds to it and makes me not look like a wishy washy jerky face when I go to take it back.

that was a joke

Ammo was rarer and expensive back then. They wouldn't be shooting unless they had a damn good chance at hitting. And they're not about to be firing off rounds as fast as they can until their barrels or action disintegrate.
Have a photo of my M1s.

that poor m60
Is 1400$ a decent price for a default M1A (no loaded or match stuff)

They've gone up in price quite a bit in the last couple of years. I remember seeing them at gander mountain (an overpiced outdoors shop like cabellas) selling non-match wood stock M1A's for $900

Seems to me that $1400 is the current average...
Oh and is someone planning on making a knife thread? Would be cool to see.

How did I not know about this????
Just got back from picking up my JW-2000 shotgun. God damn it is beautiful.
I'd give pictures but my phone camera is not so good.
Speaking of which does anyone here live in Central Florida and have property out in the country they shoot at that wants to make a new friend? :v:
I'm tired of paying people I don't like to use their indoor range. It isn't even fucking airconditioned. Therefore I'd rather spend time with a new friend outside than alone inside.

MSRP for a National Match is about $1500 right now.
For a base model one, I wouldn't pay more than $1100

Do you know a website that sells them for that much? I'm having a hard time finding one for under ~1400$. Still new to buying fire arms over the internet, so I don't know all the good sites yet.

What the heck is a Fleet Farm? Is it anyway related to a Farm & Fleet?
I made a holster for my Navy:

Sexy.
I can't help but think it looks more like a penis than standard holsters though.
