I don't want to sound like an ass, but I think you already know the reasons why you shouldn't hunt deer with a .22, I shouldn't need to tell you.
Why, because if you hit it in the brain it will die?
Why, because if you hit it in the brain it will die?
Serious trouble with the law if you're ever caught doing it in most states.
Technically not in Australia. But if you miss and wound it, instead of killing it you will be in trouble
Technically not in Australia. But if you miss and wound it, instead of killing it you will be in trouble
And if you miss with a .308 or .223 or 30-30 you will also wound it and be in trouble...
There is a HUGE difference between the ballistics of .22LR and .308Win/.223Rem/.30-30 Fudd.

Yeah, but if you miss you miss, it's all down to the shooter, not the round.

If you hit a deer with a .308, it's ALOT more likely to bleed out or die instantly than it would with a .22lr.

That wouldn't be a miss then, because the animal died like you intended it too.
Hey guys, I don't have my reloading book here at the moment, but how big is the difference between 9x19 and .22lr approximately?
In terms of velocity at 25 meters, I forgot that part
but it would've died in extreme pain. Do you understand that?

.22 LR = 5.6×15mmR, if that helps
Hunting is supposed to be humane, yes a .22lr can make it bleed out, but here in Norway thats actually illegal. ".22lr can be used at game at rabbit size though not rabbits"

Osrry, I might have added that part while you were replying, but I meant in terms of velocity.

Ah. From what I was able to google (not sure if this will match your reloading book but we'll see), a 32gr .22LR will travel at 500 m/s. A 40gr .22LR will travel at 330 m/s.
A 115gr 9x19 will travel at 390 m/s. 124.1gr will travel at 360 m/s.
finally got around to posting these pics
I welded together a target in preparation for the first day with the nug, forgot i was using steel core rounds lol

Why not rabbits?
I mean really at that size rabbits are the only thing worth eating unless you want to try for Squirrel.
If you're confident in your ability to hit the thing dead on in the head then I see no reason to NOT hunt deer with .22LR. If the penetration is that good it's going to die.
Hell even if it ISN'T that good it's evident that the .22LR bullet has enough force to at least penetrate one side of the skull. That's all that's necessary. Even if it doesn't exit the other side the massive amount of trauma from the initial penetration and subsequent bouncing of the bullet within the cranial cavity will be enough to quickly kill any deer.
I don't see how it's inhumane in that respect.
If it has enough energy to bounce around.

Uh..
.22LR is excellent for birds like grouse.
If it has enough energy to bounce around.
Brain tissue is very soft. If it has the energy to pierce the skull I'm sure it'll at least bounce around
M1A is at my local FFL, going to pick it up now, will post pics later.
My wish list right now is comprised of a Thumbhole stock PSL with 3.5xPU Scope, a Chinese or Russian SKS, a scoped 91/30, and an AK-47.
Unfortunately I cannot afford any of these and cannot find two of the four. Bugger.
Because it's the law
Yeah, but if you miss you miss, it's all down to the shooter, not the round.
And all the hunters I've talked to would advise against going for headshots on Deers.
Because if you miss, you'll probably end up giving it a wound. It'll run away and won't die for a few days. You don't want that.
Hey guys can you fire a 2 and 3/4 inch shell out of a 3" shotgun? I ask because my breach loading side by side is 3" and I accidentally bought 2 3/4" slugs.

You should be able to.
Of course?

Yes
Thought so. Thanks for confirming.
You have one?
I am every different sort of jelly.
mine's a regular one, not a trench.
I wish I could reliably find a date on it but it's mine's pre-GCA so there isn't a serial number. Mine's been passed down a few generations, my great-grandfather was the original owner. I had pictures dating to the late 40's with family members holding the gun but those were long lost to hurricanes. I doubt they got it during wartime or the depression but it's possible that they just didn't get a camera until then. It was probably either mid-late 40s or sometime in the 20s.
there were like 2 million built and only a few thousand ever went into service. they aren't exactly rare guns as far as I'm aware

This is an interesting forum post about the penetrating power of a .22LR round on a deer skull. Give it a read.
you can't legally aim for the head when hunting in most states. People think it's inhumane for some reason.

yes
The prices at the Shoot Straight here in Central Florida really disgust me. But maybe that's because Classic Firearm's warehouse style pricing and Gun Vault's "You'll spend less buying from us than paying shipping and the FFL Fee" style of pricing.
But then again. $580 for a Romanian WASR-10 that looks like shit (Rough unfinished stock, a [most likely] shitty CAI re-manufactured lower/upper/receiver, and what looks like bad spot welds around the front sight), $450 for a Yugoslavian SKS, and $550 for a 15-22?
The fuck.
