if it was one of the older ones I'd say go for it, but it sounds like you don't know enough about it which makes it kinda hard to decide
Chambered in 30-06, Not the 700P version. I would imagine it's 30-40 years old since it was this guy's uncle, (The guy who is selling it to me is about 50 himself, so it's gotta be kinda old)... The thing was never shot, all wood and in perfect shape.
Chances are that the is scope pure shit unless it's an old quality Zeiss (which is mediocre by todays standard), so I'd recommend that you dig up atleast $1000 for a good scope alone. Also, that rifle is one of higher quality 700's compared to the ones produced today if well maintained.
My tip is:
Buy the rifle, throw the scope, buy a new scope.
Nightforce - name is incredibly tacky, but it's a good brand
Meopta -uses some of the same glass as Zeiss, but is more affordable
Zeiss - is always a winner, but can be pricey
Schmidt & Bender - again, pricey, but will last a lifetime (I've heard good things especially about the PM II)
These are the ones I recommend
Swarovski too
Ahh, yes Swarovski too, I keep forgetting about them, I had a sapmi going on and on about Schmidt & Bender, a wannabe american who bought a Nightforce, a son of a zeiss importer and one my teacher is the only one who imports Meopta to Norway.

Sounds like an old hunting rifle, which is usually worth $400-$500. The question is who makes the scope.
How much recoil is in a .40S&W? I'm a small guy, and I've only fired .22, 9mm, and a 38 Special.
Not much harder than 9mm. I like .40s&w

If it's an old fudd gun you can bet that it's a Bushnell or something
I've been thinking of getting one of those GSG-5s, anyone here got one?
I've been thinking of getting one of those GSG-5s, anyone here got one?
IIRC someone here had one and bought an airsoft third party stock for it because it was built better than the original one :v:

No it isn't...it's never been fired and is in perfect shape. Like I said, Remmington 700. The police and military use it...it's not some fudded up piece of shit. Just trying to decide between that and a Bushmaster AR15 for $700.
Get more infor on the R700 before you think about buying it. It could be a really good piece.

Yeah I mean I trust the guy, he's from my church so I know him quite well. It's just a matter of deciding between the AR and the other one. Have to see it.

ATI has no idea what the main difference between firearms and airsoft toys is. Steer clear of their products.

I used an HK stock!

ATI is only an importer. They don't manufacture anything.
Bluh I mixed up names there.
But still; GSG is also a company based around manufacturing low-grade airsoft accessories.
The slide on their 1911 is made out of zinc, most of their firearms have open magazines (seriously, wat) and their post-lawsuit "MP5s" are inane garbage.

I'd get one of those, but Maryland doesn't allow you to purchase magazines that hold over 20 rounds in the state. You're allowed to drive out of state to buy them but I doubt gun stores have these mag's handy...

The mags are open for the sliders that allow you to load the mags easily.
Besides, it's not like you're going to be rolling in the dirt at a carbine class with one of these things.
And they're no worse quality than the Colt M4 .22 or the HK .22s. The HK .22 is an exact duplicate of the pre-lawsuit GSG-5. Only difference is the barrel shroud.

Just because the police and military use it doesn't mean it's not a hunting rifle too. The vast majority of 700s are and were hunting rifles, the mechanism and design of the bolt and receiver is what makes it an R700, and they're available in every calibre from .22-250 to .300 Remington Ultra Magnum, heavy barrel and standard, and all manner of stocks. The style of the stock is more so what differentiates a police/military version of the R700 to a hunting model. If it's got a wood or laminate stock and is chambered in anything but .308 or .223, then it's a hunting model, and likely has an old Bushnell or Tasco scope on it.
Also, speaking of the modern R700s and them going off randomly, I was showing a customer at the store one and it went off when he tapped the bolt. I'd always thought those rumours were full of shit until I actually saw one do it, I'm just really thankful we NEVER load the guns in the store, no matter the circumstances.

Didn't say that at all. I'm saying that it's not "some old hunting rifle." Which implies it's overly used, which it isn't.

I see, but I think something can be "some old hunting rifle" and unused, all that statement tells me is the gun is old and designed for hunting. It can very well be unfired, or very lightly used, but all "some old hunting rifle" tells me is it's a common gun, designed for hunting, and it's old.
the rem700 is a hunting rifle
stop crying

Old doesn't mean it's bad. Like I said, good shape. I need a good SHTF weapon. My AK uses proprietary parts and takes single stack mags. I have a Mosin that needs a scope/mount. An AR is a great platform and can work next to my AK. So should I get the AR and scope my Mosin or just get the R700 and scrap the AR idea?
Was just visiting an old acquittance yesterday for a few pints and he brought down a gun I haven't seen in years a Star Z-62, big blast from the past, it was a rusty piece of shite originally belonging to his oul fella, yet he still held on to it. I doubt it still fires though,
It looks like this, it is however a lot more worn and dirty.

It depends on what you want to do. An AR is a bullet hose, like an AK. An R700 is a more precise weapon, and is slower to fire.

AR is semi auto. Not full auto, though I do want the bump fire stock. Just want SHTF weapons.
You're paranoid.

No, prepared. Never know what'll happen.
you think he's paranoid? I know a guy who keeps canned food hidden underground in his backyard

30-40 years old sounds like an old hunting rifle to me. Doesn't matter if it's never been fired and in perfect shape, its an old rifle. Secondly, R700's like that have never been sold for $1200. The only ones priced at that range are custom jobs. $500-$600 seems reasonable for that rifle with a scope.
Two questions...
What's a good camera for taking pictures?[need to take some pics of my Gew98]
Is it okay to use backpacks as small game bags?
AR is semi auto. Not full auto, though I do want the bump fire stock. Just want SHTF weapons.
If you want a SHTF weapon, get something in 7.62x51 or x54.
