I got to hold one of these today:

Also, how do I identify if a 1917-1918 production Colt 1911 marked Property of U.S. Government was put into service? I have the opportunity to get one, but I really want to make sure it was used in service first.
Help I've been bitten by the 10/22 barbie dressup bug.

Alright guys, I've caught lever fever. I've got my eyes on the 45-70 caliber to be specific, and I'm trying to find a Marlin 1895 STP or SBL. I'm planning on throwing a rail on the top and putting an aimpoint on it just for fun. I shot one the other day and the bullet show like a damn rainbow, or someone throwing a football at 2000+ FPS. I've got everything BUT a lever action, so time to invest in one.
Opinions on the marlins?
Is your $150 Numrich estimate including the correct sights?
The sights are roughly $30 - $50 depending on the maker. It's roughly $110 for the stock. After I get all the parts I've gotta figure out how to do the sights myself or get a gunsmith to do it and re-blu the rifle.
Anyone know where to find old-style scopes? And when I mean old, I mean old, like, 1800s style.
I'm looking to get my Handi-Rifle into 45-70 or 454 Casull

Here ya go. They be on the pricey side though. http://winchestersutler.com/BCA_Scope.html

No way to tell. All you know is that if it's US Property marked, it's a government pistol and was issued at some point in time to some kind of Federal Agency.

Not true. You can look up the cereal number to see when it was produced and who it was produced for.
Yes, but that doesn't mean you know it was used.
All you get from the serial number lookup is which branch it was manufactured for. Doesn't mean that it was issued to combat troops or even to that branch necessarily.

That begins as the starting point. Depending on how well records were kept by the quartermaster (and if you can find them, which you should be able to given it would take a while) you can determine where it has been, who it's been checked out to, etc.

So wartime = non-existant. We weren't really concerned with who was issued what specific gun until Korea and Vietnam when we started issuing rack numbers.

That doesn't mean that the files weren't out there. We had found a 1911 made in 1916 that was sent to the department of the Navy and issued to a Marine around the time of Belleau Wood. We figured all this out from using the internet and a few resources that we have available here on base. There may not be paperwork out there for every 1911 made, but saying there's nothing at all is an ignorant statement to make.

Auto correct to the max
Imagine Food Icons in the first world war... "Today we charged straight into the enemy lines... At first things went well then Boo Berry took a shot to the head and an artillery bombardment forced Colonel Sanders order a full retreat."

Can't go wrong on a Marlin.
They've been producing pretty much the same models for over a century. I say that's a solid testament to their quality.
Actually, since being bought out by Remington, Marlin has really gone to shit. My store has some Marlins, some BLRs, and some Winchesters, and there's no contest between Marlin and the other two, they blow Marlin out of the water. So much smoother and better machined. The only advantage to the Marlin is it's about $500 cheaper than a Winchester or a Browning.
Here's my question: If I did the PSL build, what would be the odds of someone on gunbroker.com buying it for, say, around $1100?
I don't see many on there, and they seem to go fast.
[editline]8th September 2012[/editline]
Keep in mind that my goal here is to build it for around 600/700, sell it, and then use the money to build another one or buy something nice.
So I just found out that the gorgeous outdoors range rather near to my house, built into a quarry and shit, is for pistols and smoothbores only.
God dammit. The only things that allow rifles around here are, for now, indoor ranges. and the closest one is 1h away (assuming the road is magically traffic free).
Fuck.

That seems hilariously counterinutitive, almost all indoor ranges around here are pistol, rimfire, and smoothbore only while most outdoor ranges allow either a mix of rifle, pistol, and slugs, or rifle only.

Also, in 1995 along with the bullshit firearms act, the government introduced regulations that would have essentially ended gun shows by making them too hard to have. This part of the Firearms Act was never put into force (thankfully) and recently the Federal government said it never will be, they're scrapping the gun show regulations that never were!

The argument for it was pretty sensed, though.
"It takes a single idiot that NDs while pointing the rifle slightly upwards, for the bullet to fly over the hill and hit somebody's skull a kilometer away, and no range owner wants to take that responsibility."
Remember, Italy is a small country, we don't have all those huge empty spaces that the North American continent offers.
Dammit, Vermont. Why must you be so far away...

Great guns. They are also able to take a scope unlike most Mossberg or Winchester leverguns. A good middle priced gun.

do yourself a favor and get a .45-70 H&R handi rifle
Imagine Food Icons in the first world war... "Today we charged straight into the enemy lines... At first things went well then Boo Berry took a shot to the head and an artillery bombardment forced Colonel Sanders order a full retreat."
Sanders Walked down the trench, happily passing out chicken to the men under his command. He passed a drum leg to Ronald Mcdonald, and another to Wendy, as he watched them happily dig in, he knew in the back of his mind that this meal may be their last. He continued down the trench handing out meals, hoping this warm meal might raise morale. Without notice he was shoved into the mud by Count Chochula as he screamed "INCOMING!". Suddenly the Col.'s ears were ringing and he could hear the faint noise of screaming. As he came too he notice he was covered in a fine red mist, and the count was laying face down in a pool of mud and blood. He looked where Ronald and Wendy were just sitting moments ago and noticed they were gone, only a red mist floating down where they once sat, more red than the hair once on their heads.

In all srsns, bushmaster M4's/AR-15's, are they decent for their price?

There is a bill in the pipeline here in the US that is like that.
This is the gun show ban. It would provide for comprehensive and open-ended regulation and inspection of gun shows. But, more importantly, it would create a two-year prison sentence for any gun show sponsor who failed to notify EVERY attendee of his responsibilities under the Brady Law. No sane person would sponsor a gun show under these circumstances. In addition, the bill would significantly increase criminal sentences for recordkeeping violations by FFL's or for Brady Law violations.
Because we totally need tougher punishment for FFLs too, those aren't nightmarish enough.

Save up and get the Ruger AR, it's totally worth it. Just got back from the range with mine tonight, 2" groups at 100 yards standing offhand and not a single problem, and I can manage 1" groups with a rest.
Does not give a rats ass about ammo either, I put 40 grain, 55 grain and 62 grain cartridges through it and the only difference was elevation. Plus with the piston, all the heat is way out at the end of the gun.
Dacommie I think I already asked you this but where in Ontario are you?
Was browsing a new gun store that I'm near, found a MAS-49. Haven't seen one before, felt good, looks neat. Anyone have any experience with it?
Heading out to a gunshow tomorrow.
Not sure what I am going to get...
I want one last purchase. One last 'cool' purchase. Something different to add spice to my collection.
So far I am looking at possibly getting...
Suomi KP-31
PPSH-43 Pistol
UZI Carbine.
If none of those...we'll see what, if anything, catches my eyes.

I've held a PPs-43 and it's like holding a collection of lawnmower blades.
Suomis are really nice, but personally, I don't really see the point of a semi-auto only submachine gun.
If it were me I'd look for a nice Swedish Mauser, a Swiss K11 or K31 if you're looking for rifles. Or a C96, Government 1911, other cool pistols

They're surprisingly accurate and great fun to shoot.
According to one of my friends you'd want to get one made in the 90's/before they got brought by Remington, though I haven't seen much if any evidence of differing in terms of Q&C.
Marlin Lever-guns are groovy beans in my book.
