Of course it's possible (though it's nearly impossible to find an American that will admit it), you just need a large and good well trained army, just that as of now no single nation has that.
Of course someone will come up with "But the militas would kick anyone's ass!!!!", and no, the militias wouldn't be able to do much we don't live in the 18th century anymore, an army has so many things a militia can't counter/fight (an airforce for example). And though everybody in the U.S. (and in all the other countries in the world) like to think that they are so tough and would take up arms against a well armed invading army and fight heroically, in reality they (for the vast majority) wouldn't (and this goes for any nation on earth, not just the U.S.).

Militias would most likely fight an unconventional war. What the hell would enemy air forces do? It's not like they're going to march in formation from battle to battle.
A man with good aim can make a pretty decent sniper as many hunters and "gun nuts" are. Fire a couple rounds, kill a couple people, retreate for the day. Couple days later, go somewhere new, repeat.

There is a psychological factor too. You could get ambushed at any moment, with anything from a few pistol shots to a pipebomb to an IED. This isn't the Middle East, this is North America. We have trees, bushes, cornfields, and mountains, tons of places to hide and attack, then hide some more.
i think its been proved before that guerilla tactics on home soil will almost always defeat a larger conventional army, whether the country being attacked is occupied or not
look at Finland in the winter war, Afghanistan when Russia invaded, America in the revolutionary war, etc...

America and the revolutionary war is a bad example, there was some guerrilla attacks used, but it was nearly all conventional.

for your info, you can compare militia forces to rebels in hl2. They can't fight any major battles because of military owned vehicles. The only thing they can do is fight minor battles that make no difference to the war effort. They have to hide or else they will just be shot on sight.
oh and finland and afghanistan are bad examples. They both have two super important features. Snow and mountains. and besides that, those countries are small compared to the US.
An occupation of the USA would be really really bloody. Too many people are going to shoot the occupying force, eventually they would just be reduced to shooting every single door or window that opens, or reducing every building they take fire from to rubble.
Eventually they are just going to start rounding up civilians and shooting them every time a convoy is ambushed/bombed.
