Well the Native's are pretty much gone.
What your teacher probably meant (to counter some of these responses) is that if the US was invaded, it is just too damn big of a country for, even our national and state guards, to keep under control. Obviously the force that invaded could not occupy the country for long due to the sheer amount of insurgency that would be inevitable, unless they utilize some very freakin effective propaganda (which in the US, is terrible, transparent propaganda, well not totally invisible like the Soviet Union's though...).
Of course you also have to look into the details of the military of the invading force, and where they are invading from...

Chinese forces could easily occupy mainland America in a full-out war. With Russian or even Korean assistance, they'd have no problem. Obviously Americans would have a underground rebellion and insurgency, but the fact is that as long as it's in enemy control, it's occupied.
