Blank firing guns are not illegal in the UK, but they have the same laws as airsoft guns.
If you get a BB gun maybe you could spray paint it black, or just match it up using paint or marker pens, for example.
Beware that unless you're registered with a Airsoft commision you have to have a 2-Tone paint job. Just don't take it in public and you'll be fine.

Wow, this thread is fucking ancient. I did the filming for this already... I bought a fairly expensive BB gun made out of metal, and spray-painted it black. I filmed in public, but nobody cared, as they could see the huge camera, and scripts everywhere. I got rid of the gun afterwards. Here's a picture of the gun during filming...It used to be bright neon-esk orange.

Skeggy market
Didn't really need it, and I didn't want to keep it hanging around.
If you get a BB gun maybe you could spray paint it black, or just match it up using paint or marker pens, for example.
Thats illegal, your get yourself in some serious problems if you spray paint them black. Its to make sure there not real guns, although there are ways around this.
snip -- too late

How do people even make these kind of mistakes
I've spraypainted so many $5 toy guns for props before, it's the best option by far. Then I found an early 90s electronic Uzi water gun that looks EXACTLY like a real Uzi, no orange tip or anything, and that's what I use now.

-snip- necro thread...
