I'm more interested in animation/modelling. Coding isn't exactly my strong point. I'm taking the long way in the industry so I got 4 years to build a portfolio haha
The course i'm looking at will teach us Intermediate "Modelling, Animating, Sound Design, Programming and Using SDKs(Mapping)" for the first 2 years, after which we pick our own specialisation in one area for the next 2 years. Sounds good getting a bit of everything as well as a Speciality in one subject.
My course is 2 years :frown: An accelerated course, but still.
Game Design is pretty useless, Game Technology is pretty good though and you should go for that one.
I want to get into Modelling as well OP, that or level design. I went up to Teeside University to enroll in their animation course and they said that they wouldn't have considered me had it not been for my portfolio (of level design stuff I made in UDK. Durr on my behalf). There's no need for a jack of all trades, you need to specialise.
http://www.lyit.ie/courses/computing/ly707/ Thats the course I wanted to do. It shows what we would be doing. I'm hoping to do the Video Game Art course there, and to be honest the way everyone was on about portfolio I felt that I'd have no chance of getting in, f you want to do Video Game design seriously, portfolio is the way to go. The main reason I'm going to teesside is due to the work experience they offer.
I wish the spark in my brain never took me down the path of doing games design, it's probably the biggest waste of 3 years I've done and I could've wasted that time masturbating or playing games.
Colleges aren't only looking at grades and community service. Most colleges want a particular kind of person. Maybe the 4.0 kid's essay wasn't convincing enough or passed off a personality that the college didn't like. For some of the places I've gotten into, people I know and have much higher grades than me and go to AP classes were denied.
There was no reason why this kid should've been denied. He was first in his class and his parents even offered to pay out of state tuition.
Waste in time unless your really involved in gaming communities, Inside Xbox did a thing a while back on how to improve your chances, its just really hard career to succeed in because everyone wants to do it, if you don't get picked up by a company or get a job, you could just end up wasting your time and being a bum, living a bog standard 9-5 job. If its your dream why not, but be ready for the worst if your not the best, its a dog eat dog world and only the best get chosen. Oh and expect your parents to be against it.
Lol wtf I'm planning on doing the same course in LYIT next year.
Lol wtf I'm planning on doing the same course in LYIT next year.
What really?
Yeah me and another guy from Donegal are thinking of doing either games development or programming
Well my mum isnt against it so much as insisting I do another course on top of it as "Insurance. What really?
Your mom says shes wants you to do another course as Insurance as she hates the idea but wants you to do whatever you want and be happy about it because she never had the chance to do what she really wanted to do, but eventually when you get closer and closer to starting college the more you mom will hate the idea of it, happened to me, probably happened to a lot of people. A few of my friends are doing it at college but say they suck at it in comparison to some of the people that don't do anything other than learn, study, practice the same things day in and day out to try and reach there max potential, which they could be out done by someone that goes to a more private college. In my opinion either do something you have your heart set to or if you don't know what you want to do in life, look at the pyramid of jobs and money and aim for the top, do something which has a wide range of opportunities and offers big payouts, for example; im doing aerospace engineering, yeah there not many jobs in the UK at the moment, but in 3/4 years when I finish university their will be and im at the top of engineering specialty so I can easily do anything else in the engineering universe.
If you really love the game industry, there is no stopping you. And you don't really have to be involved at indie games/modding right now But its a good thing to have tho
Seems a lot of us are planning to get the same job. If i have to fight you for the job i will. You guys are going down.
Seems a lot of us are planning to get the same job. If i have to fight you for the job i will. You guys are going down.
We'll have to settle this like gentlemen, meet me by the riverside. At dawn.
I'm on a similar course at Nescot. It's a rather cool course, even though some parts aren't exactly what I call fun. The practical stuff, like map-making, modelling, art and suchlike, I really like, but stuff like theory and the business side of things kinda wear me down. I'm nearly at the end of the first year, and i'm hoping to get the coursework done, especially a certain piece that has eroded my sanity to no end. It's something I like to do, and a profession I want to excel in, but it's tough. But hey, at least i'm not studying something boring. Also, i'm hoping that I gain the skills I need at the end of this semester that permit me to start doing some mod-related work over the summer. If I can get my hands on 3DS Max for my home PC, I might be able to make a hat or weapon to contribute to TF2. Here's to hope.
i would avoid "colleges" such as devry, pheonix, or kaplan. because if i was an employer, i wouldn't take those schools seriously. Would you take school that's advertised to the audience that watches [adult swim] seriously? find a respectable community community college that offers computer science courses. don't get a game design degree because no one will take you seriously and you won't get jobs in other computer related fields. get a degree in computer science because at least that way, you could get any other job in the computer industry and it sounds more professional.
Actually, Looking at the list of game development companies in Ireland I see that many, if not most, Are mobile platform developers. Although I'm not exactly picky on what I get to work on, I always wanted to make things that are more.....3D cinematic types.
You could immigrate to a different country.
You could immigrate to a different country.
Yeah I had thought of that, but the industry here is still young. I dont want to just make games, I want make Irish games better, make peoples expectations better and such. I'd like to see it at least become able to make decent games. Of course, 10 years down the line if I get offered a job for a game company somewhere else whose work I enjoy then I more than likely would.
Im thinking of engineering. Gaming industry is already packed.
engineering=not a single woman
Right now I'm enrolled in Game Design and Development at a public university in the states and all that is is a major in CS and a minor in math. Along with taking shit tons of CS and Calc, we also take GDD classes where we learn how to make effective games (gameplay, user-friendliness, etc.). In the initial semesters we are learning Java (we just moved on to Android). After that we'll delve into C++. The university I go to is all about making sure we have strong portfolios to get into our respective industries.

I too would like to enter said business. (Surprise!) Still, I do not want to become a mere peasant in a giant company. I want to follow my father's footsteps a bit and start my own company. While I may not do every bit of programming or whatever I will also be the one who runs the company with a few employees. That's what I'm aiming for. I get to work on the game but I still run my own business.

If I go into game design and don't land at a professional company, ie Valve or DICE, is saying going indie a good idea for a safety net? If not, what fields could I possibly take for level design that if not the video game industry I could go elsewhere? I'm into level design.

Right now I have an iPhone developer license, so iPhone and PC could be a target.
