• Violence on television causes humans to be violent in real life.
Monkey see, monkey do.
Monkey's don't have parents that should talk to them, Human's do.
I think every single user on this forum watched violent television or video games when they were young, we don't have much room to complain. But TV and games a bit back were kinda cheesy.
I disagree. If you can't control yourself you shouldn't watch. It's everybody's choice and they don't have to be babysitted. One does crazy stuff and all lose getting cake is not fair.
I have to admit that gaming and tv have made me swear more.
Gaming and TV tought me better English than what my school provided.
Gaming and TV tought me better English than what my school provided.
rofl I can see how effective it was.
Thank god I don't have these problems. I watched horror/action movies at age 4 :D
I've played almost every violent video game known to man and I'm not a violent person in real life. I was in like 4th grade though; I threw a kid into a toilet. :v:
I don't get why you guys are using yourselves as examples, like garry has been saying, this is about impressionable children (a youngen that has no idea killing is bad) not you (a child who most likely knows that killing is wrong) playing quake at 12 and not killing people. On to the subject though I think parents are getting a lot worse now, when I was a kid every parent I knew was nice, friendly, and taught their child what was right and wrong, a.k.a. a good parent. However now-a-days I'm seeing a lot of bad, rotten, and shitty little kids who think it's okay to cuss people out and threaten them with rubber knives, around the time these little shits became more apparent there is also a noticeable increase in shitty parents who don't care what their children do. To shorten pretty much everything, Good Kids == Good Parenting == Probably Non-Violent child Bad Kids == Bad Parenting/No Parenting == Mostly Violent child
I don't think voilence is an emotion. And you all need to get it through your thick skulls that we're talking about young children here. Impressionable kids. Oh, you watched Total Recall when you were 14 and you haven't killed anyone yet? Must be fine! Fuck it, all this actual research must be bullshit. Smoking doesn't give you cancer. I know people who have smoked since they were 15 and they haven't died yet.
You do have a point here. On a bit unrelated topic: There will NEVER be harmony between generations. At certaing ages our brains click, we start thinking differently. Par example, it's common in our school to have those tobacco bags under your lip or some stupid shit like that. Everybody thinks it's harmless, like this shit never happen to anybody. But if you've seen someone buried in a closed coffin, cause the infection in the upper lip evolved into a cancer and destroyed the whole face and kaputt. Then you realise how stupid youth is. The youth has been always fucked and will always be. Generations value different things, people who think they won't want to marry, will change their way of thinking in next 10-15 years. So yeah, I don't know how it hooks with the topic, but I can only say, that :04: is no more
"oh, batman can fly. that must mean, that also i can fly! :excited: *on rooftop* *jumps* WEEEE!! :excited: OHSHI---"
batman can't fly what kind of childhood did you have
batman can't fly what kind of childhood did you have
People often associate gliding with flying, and batman does glide using his BAT WINGS
There was a lot of wrong people in the thread I just closed. They believed that witnessing violence does not make you violent. This is wrong. There was a famous experiment called the bobo doll experiment. Read about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobo_doll_experiment. Everything a child sees it learns. If it sees violence on TV, it leans how to be violent. Here's the video of it Seems pretty conclusive to me..
No! It's not true! I played games and I haven't murdered anyone yet! Those scientists and grownups just DON'T UNDERSTAND!! Of course, one must also remember that the internet in general and gaming specifically have many psychologically addictive qualities, so a strong reaction of denial shouldn't really come as a surprise.
No! It's not true! I played games and I haven't murdered anyone yet! Those scientists and grownups just DON'T UNDERSTAND!!
TH89, your avatar is confusing. :(
Some may be able to relate to what I have to say, while others may think it sounds completely foreign to them. I think it has to do with testosterone: -When you are browsing a pornographic website, you're testosterone level are elevated. When Mom comes in and asks you a question, you are likely to be agitated. The link: higher testosterone and aggressive behavior. -People who play sports and compete often have higher testosterone levels, especially contact sports. How many fights do you see in hockey? What about football? A lot. The link: higher testosterone and aggressive behavior. -Muscular guys have higher testosterone than skinny guys. Put a 6 foot 3, 215 lb guy in a room with a 6 foot 3, skinny 160 lb guy and the bigger guy is more likely to dominate the interection. The more muscular guys tend to be more action orientied and aggressive, while skinnier guys tend to be more sedentary and passive. The link? The bigger guy (who has higher testosterone) tends to be more aggressive. Do you see the link yet? -Guys who were once skinny and became muscular tend to have their testosterone levels shoot through the roof! They become aggresive and sometimes even violent. -This one is kind of embarassing. I would get boners when playing violent games. I remember this especially when playing Postal 2. Running around with a shovel, and having the woman bend down and begging for her life knowing that I was about to cut her head off with the shovel gave me an instant hard on. It's not because these things turn me on. No! It's because viewing these violent things increases my testosterone. Men with high levels of testosterone tend to get many (sometimes hundreds) of random boners a day. -After working out for an hour or so, you're testosterone levels are their highest, then decline later. I would come home from the gym, and for whatever reason, unlease a LOT OF ANGER on my girlfriend, and I couldn't control it (at first). Not to mention on the way home, I'd be yelling, blasting music, driving aggresivly and honking the horn (okay, not honking :P). For some reason it would kind of turned her on, lol: "You're sexy when you're angry!" The link: Testosterone and anger, aggression, etc. I was skinny and became muscular. I was 5'11" and 140 lbs, then through diet and execise became 5'11" 190 lbs. What I felt? AGGRESSION! I also had the urge to go out and run around and do risky things. I no longer felt happy at home in front of the computer, I just wanted to go out and jump around! I tended to get into trouble much more often due to engaging in risky behaviour. When I was driving I would YELL AT THE OTHER CARS and other "stupid drivers." It sounds funny but it was very hard to resist. Common questions! So what are you saying? Testosterone is bad and it makes you a bad guy? Should we stop playing Counter-strike, watching TV, and sit home all day? No! There are many benefits of testosterone. Women are attracted to testosteronized guys. There is a reason that they are ALL OVER the football players and muscular guys. Their attractivness goes far beyond the "image." The muscle they have is not a masculine dress. There is also a link to testosterone and power. There is a link to testosterone and genius, too. Presidents and leaders tend to have high testosterone, it's no wonder Barack Obama is so confident on TV (testosterone level is related to your confidence level). Thomas Jefferson was known to be "unemotional and reserved," until he was on a horse. When he was riding a horse he was known to be overly emotional (see above for my experience)! I became 1000% happier when I got bigger. I slept much easier and deeper. Getting women was 1000 times easier and more than often I found the most attractive girls staring at me. There are studies that show that men with higher testosterone are happier and healthier than men with lower testosterone levels, and I definietely feel this! But the whole point of this thread was that viewing violent things on television will make you violent. Monkey see, monkey do! Yes, viewing violent things and surfing porn can make you violent, but as said earlier, you must learn to control it. It is also my belief that these effects are mostly temporary, and only a small bit of it "rubs" off on us. Meaning: when mom comes in and inturrupts your fapping session, you are very angry, but it goes away with time. The opposite is true if you put on a lot of muscle mass. You tend to be angry ALL THE TIME, and doing things like playing violent video games and browsing naked women on the Internet make it worse... again, unless you know how to control it. It is not so much learning to control the anger, it's more like learning to control the testosterone. It is very useful and enjoyable when you learn when to suppress it and when to unleash it! But wait! How do I "learn" how to control my testosterone/anger? You control it by being aware of it. The "jerks" and "jocks" you see getting all the girls in high school were likely that way all their life, so they don't know how to be any different. They are completely unaware of themselves. But, I was skinny before. I remember how I used to act and how I used to feel, so I can use it to my advantage and eliminate the sideaffects of being "testosteronized." Why should this information excite me? Because you are a man! Men have more testosterone than women, and believe it or not, you can alter your testosterone levels. See my examples above, I'm living proof. You too can become the "god awful jerk" that gets all the attention in high school. So that's my view on the topic. Agression = testosterone. Testosterone = good, especially if you know how to control it. And no, this isn't a post trying to convince you to get off your butt and lift weights, this is just my view on the topic of "Television vs Violence."
I think you mean incredibly cool
Stop watching "House" and drop into the real world.
I admit, I love House. But I don't understand your message! My message, though worded differently, can be seen as completely scientific, as well as derived from personal experience and observation. Tell me, Crazy, how that is not "down to earth?"
It's not a real human anyway. If the doll was replaced with a human, of course the child wouldn't try and hurt it. Fake doll =/= Real humans.

I also get boners when I chase people with a chainsaw and drive over people in GTA.
those kids look completely retarded
Yes, watching violence on TV can make you violent, but only if you are very weak-minded and cannot just take it as a point of reference as opposed to taking it all seriously and allowing yourself to think about copying it without being concious of it. Watch violence, but remain concious of your mental trail of thought.
They work for Jack Thompson.
He can't pay them, he doesn't have any money
I'm pretty sure there was violence prior to Televison.
Before TV kids learned violence from watching real violence. Just because the violence is on the TV doesn't mean kids don't learn to be violent from it; it's just an extra way to learn to be violent. Edit:
Yes, watching violence on TV can make you violent, but only if you are very weak-minded and cannot just take it as a point of reference as opposed to taking it all seriously and allowing yourself to think about copying it without being concious of it. Watch violence, but remain concious of your mental trail of thought.
I tried explaining this to my kids when they were three years old but they just stared at me and looked confused.
Well going with the whole theory of Tabula Rasa, kids at a young age (the age group garry is talking about) will be affected by violence seen on television and video games. Some, depending on the child, may even be permanently affected even if a parent or respectable adult intervenes and tells them that it's wrong. On the other hand there are children that won't even be phased by it, and continue to lead a non-violent life. It all depends on the child, the environment, and how bad the violence was. A child might mimic an adult hitting an inanimate object (the blow-up doll) however I don't think the child would like watching someone slowly bleeding out. Just my 2 cents.
The only weak spot in this experiment is that the children didn't watch it in TV. It's not an extra way, after all, they are still watching it. It is the same way. Mikfoz, an extra way would be being beaten themselves, that's an extra way.
