• A short rant on American politics and society...

Disclaimer: This is more an opinion piece than a debate starter, I just thought this would be a good place for it. If it does become a debate, just don't expect me to argue with you. I don't want to argue, I just want to voice my opinion and maybe see some others. I posted on a Facebook thread that people, with each generation, are slowly becoming more and more tolerant of others. Race, creed, and sexual preference mean less and less to people as you look at declining ages. So for people of my generation, we'll tend to gravitate toward the candidates who allow the greatest amount of individuality and freedom. Recently, the democrats have had the most liberal social policy, but they lack the fiscal and common sense to support those policies with a smaller government. People wonder why my generation gravitates toward liberals. It's because of guys like Santorum. The "Your rights end where my religion/morals begin" mentality is something my generation tends to resent. And the less politically inclined of my peers have been offered no alternative. It's always a choice between "Big government and lose your right to property" or "Small-ish government and lose your right to free expression." Of course, that's an extremely simplified statement, but it's fairly accurate. In conclusion, I believe it's time to shake up the system. The two-party way of doing business has failed. Miserably. I want a new kind of system, a new kind of party, and a new way of thinking in this country. I want politicians to value the individual and his rights and stop treating us like a collective of sheep to be herded. I want an understanding of the role of government to come back. I want teachers to stop telling students what to think, and help us learn how to think. I, more than anything else, want my God Damn Liberty! [editline]time[/editline] ...Reading over this, my first thought is "And I thought Communists were the Utopianists." So I realize how unlikely all this sounds, but a guy can dream, can't he? Two parties will always be inevitable due to limited thought processes in people. The reason America is a two part system in the first place is due to the differences in Jefferson and Hamilton. They differed on some ideas, and that was enough to justify the system. There shouldn't be a party system at all, but the popular idea is that there should be, and it's so ingrained in American government, people have forgotten that the system isn't two party. People like the idea of simply voting for a guy with similar opinions based on his affiliation with a single entity. Hell, the irony in this all is the only man to be voted in to office with out association with any political parties, George Washington, foresaw the consequences and warned us in his farewell adress.
sdwise, you sound like you want to support Ron Paul. Libertarianism supports both individual freedom and small government. Civil liberties as well as property rights.

I don't really prefer to follow party lines, but that's the closest I've got to a party I can relate to.

A couple years ago I posted a thread in the GD making a similar complaint like your OP, though it was more oriented on how people vote for the party oppose to the individuals like they should. Majority of FP said I was either retarded for thinking so or naive to believe such a system could be made.

Hell, I'm quick to doubt. But I think that, with this shitty world we live in, hope is our greatest weapon against despair. Some people have just lost hope in a world here people can get along and be individuals at the same time. But I can't afford to lose hope in this ideal. As soon as I do, I'll end up losing my humanity to a government or group. And I refuse to do that silently and without a fight.
