you guys have so much music shit. all i have is headphones, a keyboard and a totally legal copy of reason :(
That's all you need really, everything else is fluff. Fun fluff sure, but fluff.
Not sure if you've heard my and my friends project "Cheesypoop" (chances are you disliked it!), but I'm having a bit of an issue. All the songs we make sound extremely 'dry'.. Since I'm in charge of mixing the catastrophy I'm very confused of what to do.
Here's an example of our latest released song:

I know the vocals need reverb, I've already taken care of that. But I'm not sure with the guitars and bass. Help!

bass needs the lower mids boosted, guitar needs some compression
the drums need the levels worked on too. you should have different tracks for each drum, not just one big track.

Shame, I liked him!
Went to a flea market and found a Viktor Tsoy vinyl of the album ''bloodtype''.
I can now die happy.
Renoise. That is all.
Seriously though, it's pretty cool so far. A very fast workflow especially if you're working with samples. i got used to the layout pretty quickly and I honestly think I might buy and switch to it. Anyone here have any experience with Renoise or trackers in general?
Yes, buy Renoise.
It's only like 30 euros (at least, when I bought it), and totally worth it. I love the signal follower. I was sad to see my good friend Fruity Peak Controller go, before I found out Renoise has something similar (the signal follower). I still use FLStudio 10 though, I haven't fully stepped away from it yet.
The only downside might be a loss of visual feedback. As in, there's no piano roll to somewhat visualize melodies and stuff. I only ever program stuff though (can't play keys for shit), so I don't mind it that much.
It's a DAW that really makes you use your ears, which is pretty good actually.
Yeah I think I'm going to buy it. I've tried openMPT and a couple other trackers, i liked them and Renoise just brings the whole concept up to date. It seems really good for breakbeat stuff, the timeline makes you think in different ways as opposed to basing everything around fours.
I always forget about renoise. I own it but I keep forgetting to install it since I reformatted. I've really liked it when I've played with it before though. Great piece of software.
It's $70, I'll grab it on my next check. I like WYSIWYG interfaces like Reason but I'm getting used to Renoise pretty quickly. Great default sample collection too.
What do your project files look like? I've always found looking at project files interesting.
Heres one of mine:

I need to get into habit of actually naming tracks and things..

This is what it looks like when I do my mixing

Why don't you make some macros in massive man? There's like a bazillion automation clips in your playlist
Why don't you make some macros in massive man? There's like a bazillion automation clips in your playlist
I'm only really automating the resonance on the second filter and the cross fade slider. The rest is automation clips for all the plug-in's affecting massive.
Fuck, looks like this isn't my week guys, not only have I had to recover all my shit after getting trojans, but I've just discovered I failed my GCSE exam, which makes this week 2x as hard to get motivated to work on the album.
I'm definitely gonna continue work on it at some point, though, perhaps to get my mind off it.
i've really started getting into acoustic covers
apart from Boyce Avenue (who i found to be amazing)
are there any other acoustic cover artists i should search for?
any really popular ones?
Why is this happening to my song:

Anyone know in Ableton how to change the piano roll ruler?
It's "1, 2 ,3 ,4 etc" but I want it to be "1, 1.2, 1.4 etc"

You probably have your signature as 1/4:

You need to set it to 4/4 to get the decimal measures:

After giving Renoise, OpenMPT and a couple other trackers a shot, i think I've finally found a workflow that works for me, which means I can actually start finishing more tracks and not just have a bunch of half-finished shit laying around. That means I have to find a solution for arrangement/mixing/mastering, I might use Reaper for that. Any other recommendations?

Right click in the piano roll and set the value to narrow or something. You can zoom in with the little box in the lower right corner and the values will get smaller.
As a tip, if you want to make some swinging grooving stuff turning the whole thing off can be real cool.

You can generally mix and master in anything that has a mixer and allows vsts. Just get some good ones.
I can highly recommend Reaper, $60 and you'll get something that really does its job well
REAPER is fantastic. Having used Cubase since god-knows-when (Since the days of Cubase VST!) I'm now a REAPER convert. I have used protools on an almost daily basis too and I'd say it's a halfway between protools and cubase in terms of how it works.
Its routing functionality is WAY better than cubase. It works on multiple monitors better than cubase ever did.
I'd say, though, that it is more suited to multitrack audio recording and mixing rather than MIDI based song creation. Not that it can't do it, the MIDI functionality is improving with every version.
Definitely worth the money. Don't pirate it, support what is seriously an excellent piece of software at an unbeatable price (even at the full commercial price, which you won't need)
People are too fixated on the price, simply because it's cheap they assume it's a toy. Not so.
