The idea for the spotlight feature on new soundcloud is cool, but it makes me mad that my tracks aren't in order anymore D:. The old spotlight was nice because it had it's own tab for the spotlighted tracks and when you went to the normal tracks tab you had all the stuff in order there, the new spotlight just makes everything look messy.
Anyone got any idea on how to do this vocal effect? I hear it everywhere and it sounds great but I can't reproduce it.

You mean the choppy vocals? If so, that is exactly what it is: chopped bits of vocals played in a rhythm/melody.

Usually configured so that it goes with a midi-keyboard as well, so that if you play say a C you get a short sample of the vocals (must be configured manually of course) in a certain part of the vocal part, and depending on where you play on the keyboard you get a different pitch on the vocals.
Why do I always end up unknowingly increasing the tempo and playing offbeat when I try to record me playing slow bluesy piano stuff, but not when I play fast syncopated funky piano stuff?

That's a pretty easy trap to fall into, you're not alone. :v: Just play with a metronome every once in a while and your pulse will become steady whether fast or slow.
Well, it finally got released.

Anyone here who do a lot of electronica or uses synths a lot?
I think you just asked for 85% of this community
Alright then here is my question. I was thinking. I could have a midi keyboard go to my computer and then process the "sounds" there and send em out in a speaker... are there small devices that you can connect your midi keyboard which processes sound and then sends it out in a speaker/amp or whatever they're called?
[editline]10th February 2013[/editline]
Cause I know in some synths you can connect to your computer and add your own sample sounds/voices
Yeah you can get a DAW (Digital Audio workstation) such as FL studio, reason, massive, logic or ableton (to name a few) and have synth VST(Virtual Studio Technology)s in that program which will allow you to make untold number of synth sounds so that you can play whatever on your midi keyboard and have the midi information processed to sounds to your speakers.
If that's what you were asking about

As skeeter mentioned, a DAW can produce synthesized sounds to a speaker system using a VST plugin, or you could just use "Midi-out" which just transfers the audio from your midi keyboard's input to the output (if your midi keyboard is one that produces sound on it's own)
I realise but is there something like that which isn't software on the computer? Like a thing, hardware thing, I'd hate to have to get a laptop and drag it around on the shownights :v:

Those kind of synths can cost a lot... I think.
Hmm yeah you're right
The added bonus of having your laptop with you is that you can load it full with presets and instantly change the way your synth sounds with just a few clicks  It really is a blessing to have a laptop with you, gives you a lot of possibilities for your gig!
[QUOTE=MrJazzy;39541813]Hmm yeah you're right[/QUOTE]
There are some that are kinda decent but they're at least £500
most ones I'd recommend would be about £1000-10,000
Actually you can get VST boxes that run real VSTs on cut down hardware.

I'd still just bring a laptop though. I personally have a 2u Rackmount computer (With an SSD and an incredibly stripped down windows 7 installation) in a flightcase for any live stuff that requires a computer (Though it's not synth stuff)
Thanks, that's what I was looking at. But alright what's a good program to use with a midi keyboard then do simulate the sounds and stuff?
[editline]10th February 2013[/editline]
I've really looked into synths and how a synth works etc at all, I've just been playing plain piano and I'm getting interested in the stuff
[editline]11th February 2013[/editline]
I have tried using a MIDI keyboard into the computer, using the hammond plugin for cubase to play around with before but I had latency issues. What affects latency and what's the best way to avoid it? I assume the midi keyboard it self, drivers and maybe computer specs would affect it?
[editline]11th February 2013[/editline]
I can't remember if I had output delay or input delay, probably output delay right?
[editline]11th February 2013[/editline]
Also how does MIDI work when it's not usb? I don't understand how you can do midi through a soundcard with no inputs other than line ins and stuff...

you need a midi interface for that

If you're getting long delays between pressing a key and getting a sound it's more than likely the audio side, Try using ASIO4ALL if your sound card doesn't have proper ASIO drivers.
To use standard 5-pin DIN MIDI you'd need an interface. Some "professional" audio interfaces come with [url=http://www.thomann.de/gb/media_bdbviewer_AR_199889.html?image=13&small=1]proper MIDI ports[/url] on them, Some sound cards used the old legacy "Game Port" for MIDI input, but good luck getting that to work these days.
You can also get dedicated MIDI interfaces such as this:

You would have both input and output delay but actually input would be a lot more severe without a proper soundcard
Picking yourself up even a cheap recording interface will do wonders, also midi has its own set of cables and connectors that most interfaces come with
Ill buy the Emu Shortboard, it looks p cool for the price and I can use it as a midi keyboard aswell! Alright or a simple no-go?
What do you do when you suddenly start to think of your songs as sub-par and reconsider this whole making-music business?
You realize that you do it for the joy of making music, not for the joy of making good music
recently picked up guitar-playing.
today I learned the intro to the theme of morrorwind/oblivion.

Even tho making good music is a good plus since it's always rewarding when you make something great.

This.
And don't force yourself to make music.
Take breaks and play videogames, hang out with friends, watch a movie, etc. from time to time.
Hey guys,
Just want to share this:
[video=youtube;W5uNEc0pgTA]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5uNEc0pgTA[/video]
Been saving up for the past year or so and finally got started on a modular synth! I'm pretty psyched about this. Don't have much of a setup right now, but hopefully it'll grow.
