id just like to remind you all that the vast majority of women (and men, for that matter) do not care whatsoever if you are a dubstep producer
nor do they care if you play super advanced progmetal songs on guitar. that shit aint john mayer
Then why aren't more panties soaking when I'm doing a free form drum solo?
Sweat isn't flying hard enough off of you
dude my panties soaked pretty hard at this: but thats because im kind of a drum nerd, i used to watch max roach and bill bruford do solo's obsessively and you just cant expect that spergdom from everyone i drummed that song in a band once lol, but we never got the 7/4 to 4/4 conversion properly so the whole piece would slowly go out of beat
You'd have to be pretty good to be able to play Crimson tightly without fucking it up
Buying a Mapex Venus drumset tomorrow. Gonna restore it and hopefully earn some money off of it.
Jazz auditions today for university studies. Not going to be fun..
Why do people feel it's so important for music to have meaning? I was browsing youtube for top 90's songs for a kick of nostalgia when I came across this comment reading:
Hello, my name is Sid. I was born in 199,* so I am now 15. I would like to apologize on the behalf of everyone of my age, for the 'music' that they listen to. The thing is though, our music, is not really music... It's 'beats'. And these 'beats' do not have any real meaning to them. This music does. I am sorry for our 'beats'...
Now I know youtube comments are typically just retarded shit everyone should ignore, but this is just what got me to engage in the question. I've heard this argument plenty of times from friends of mine over the years and various people I've met and it's always seemed strange to me. In my opinion, if the only thing you care about in music is meaning, then you don't truly like music. Enjoying music is simply the liking of sound. Not how much thought or effort did or did not go into it's creation, but whether it sounds nice or not. Anybody who is 'for meaning', wanna share their thoughts on the matter?
for me: I like for an artist to have a predetermined meaning or emotion associated with their music, especially songs that tell a story. but a lot of music doesn't do that, and I'm okay with that.
any meaning i put into any piece of art is completely my own and not the artist's i hate artists who are pretentious and force a song to have a meaning, even lyrics mean absolutely nothing because they are just words and can be interpreted in any way someone wants
For me the best kinds of lyrics are the ones like in David Bowie's Subterraneans song, its just a bunch of disconnected phrase mashed together, and leaves you to interpret the meaning. That said I think it's nice if the artist also has their own interpretation of the phrases instead of just mashing up words and expecting that someone out there will find meaning even if they can't. Like it's fake if the words mean nothing to the artist. if I could sing, that's the sort of thing I would put in my music That said I also do really like some songs which just tell stories, old prog songs that just tell random folk stories are kind of nice, they're not meant to have a meaning often
one of my favorite songs goes
"march 23rd hushed the wind, the music died if you can't get the best of us now it's because this is forever"
a lot of their lyrics don't make sense, but they seem to fit with the feelings of the music being played by the rest of the band, and I really dig how the singer does that. on the flip-side of that, you have concept albums where everything is meant to be a certain way and convey a theme, and 20-minute songs like 2112 that are almost novels set to music. I don't have a preference for either, and to be honest, they are only a minor part of how a song is enjoyed. everything is open to interpretation, even if there is a set-in-stone meaning behind it. I really do enjoy reading lyrics, though. it's like seeing into the artist's minds and seeing how they think, regardless of what interpretation any single person makes of it. another one I really enjoy:
"Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines."

So-lavie di-le-jo So-lavie di-le-jo He-li venco -de-ho Chi-le venco de-ho Malio He-libo se-yo-man He-libo se-yo-man Malio Malio
Yep
Everyone is trying to get to the bar The name of the bar, the bar is called heaven The band in heaven, they play my favourite song Play it one more time, play it all night long Heaven, heaven is a place, a place where nothing, nothing ever happens Heaven, heaven is a place, a place where nothing, nothing ever happens There is a party, everyone is there Everyone will leave at exactly the same time When this party's over, it will start again It will not be any different, it will be exactly the same Heaven, heaven is a place, a place where nothing, nothing ever happens When this kiss is over it will start again It will not be any different, it will be exactly the same It's hard to imagine that nothing at all could be so exciting, could be this much fun Heaven, heaven is a place, a place where nothing, nothing ever happens Heaven, heaven is a place, a place where nothing, nothing ever happens
if only i could write a song as good as heaven
David Byrne has always hands down been the best lyric writer I've ever heard though Road to Nowhere is just as good as that
i love the sardonic lyrics of [nothing but] flowers, especially the "if this is paradise, i wish i had a lawnmower" bit
maynard keenan has always been one of my favorite lyricists. I don't listen to a lot of very deep, lyrical stuff anyways, so my opinion probably doesn't count for much.
a sarcastic comment about tool being deep and lyrical would be too easy
I don't even really like music with lyrics in it.
Tom Waits makes fantastic lyrics
Finished a Neon Genesis Evangelion -themed album. Yay!
There are a hundred different ways to value music. Some people just value catchiness. For me it depends what I'm listening to, but atmosphere, musical complexity, originality and artistic value is often part of it. There's no big deal with that. Of course, people tend to get self-centered with their values. We have all heard the people who completely reject modern music because all new music is meaningless beats. Yeah, it's stupid, but it's best to ignore them.

I skipped jazz band rehearsals today, but we have two drummers so the other filled in for me. I don't even think we're playing any concerts or events this year so I'm less compelled to attend because it's the same two songs every week.

My band doesn't even want to play live, even though our singer could hook us up to slightly bigger venues.
Bought myself Omnisphere and trilian, and whoop de fucking doo. Installing trilian first was a dumb idea, cuz the omnisphere installation somehow fucked up everything, so now I got no presets. Fucking spectrasonic assholes can't program anything.. Edit: Nvm, fixed it with deleting a secondary steam folder and authorizing omnisphere again.

Yeah, it's good and expensive. So many awesome sounds.
