here's an unpopular opinion Debate is virtually never productive, but the .01% that is is absolutely vital for world-scale decision-making.
The thing about debates that specifically bothers me is that thanks to the internet, everyone gets to pretend to be an expert. You see all these armchair generals on Reddit where they aren't really subject matter experts to counterweigh any of the opinions they hold based on a knowledge of the subject; it's just an opinion that aligns with their world view, that they then back up with facts that align most with said opinion. No nuance, no acknowledgement of the other involved or even necessary at all; just blind adherence to their own opinion and the facts the re-inforced it, nothing else. It's also why I have no interest in actually listening to people with 'edgy' points of view, because when they challenge people to a debate, because they'd do it on Skype or some shit, where they likely already can just insta-google some fact to make their point on the fly, rather than actually prepare. Show me someone who can actually debate, not 'Skype debate', face to face, without access to computers or some shit, and actually hold their own after doing their research and being prepared for any and all arguments against their view without running to a computer for insta-facts, then I'd be impressed. Until then, it's just relegated to nothing more than 'two edgelords bickering on the internet'.
I can't "get into" rap. No, I'm not being one of those "harhurr rap sugs" kind of people, and I can recognize some pretty good songs and beats. But I just can't try and listen to it "seriously", I don't know how to describe it. Which is weird, considering that rap basically comes from the same roots as metal and are fairly similar once you boil them to their basics. I also feel that the forced fake divide between rap and metal has soured cross-genre listening and fans, and that's p. fuckin' stupid.
Pub food ain't even that bad, and haggis are delicious.
here's an unpopular opinion Debate is virtually never productive, but the .01% that is is absolutely vital for world-scale decision-making.
eh depends a lot of time debates are just going in circles and doing nothing because there are no ideas, if you bring up actually new ideas then it becomes productives
A great deal of the time people will reject those ideas (even if provided with evidence) because they've become entrenched and defensive. It's more likely to work in-person but it's a total waste of time online. Online debates are just trash in my opinion.
Whenever i debate on this forum, i'm pretty sure the only people i might end up convincing are the lurkers reading. I have almost no expectations that i will be able to change the minds of the people i argue against. But if i can change the minds of the folks reading, that's worth it.

Any sort of discussion where two people argue to win rather than share conflicting ideas and possibly learn from them is bound to be useless. I try to come into every discussion with enough of an open mind to at least entertain the ideas I'm presented with, regardless of what they are. It can be pretty frustrating but I'd feel even worse entrenched.

I "debate" online solely to flex my knowledge and make up for my lack of self-esteem
I "debate" online solely to flex my knowledge and make up for my lack of self-esteem
That perfectly describes 50% of my online debate. The other half is debate about issues that matter a lot to me personally, which results in my argument being a disjointed mess because I'm way too emotionally invested.
I "debate" online solely to flex my knowledge and make up for my lack of self-esteem
Fuck the concept of self-esteem. If your knowledge isn't shit then you have contributed to the world by informing others through debate.
"All publicity is good publicity" is total bullshit, it's a catchy phrase but it's completely wrong
"All publicity is good publicity" is total bullshit, it's a catchy phrase but it's completely wrong
Because it's half the phrase. It's "All publicity is good publicity as long as you can use it."
Because it's half the phrase. It's "All publicity is good publicity as long as you can use it."
Just like jack of all trades, master of none, better than a master of one.
Just like jack of all trades, master of none, better than a master of one.
It's also like how "blood is thicker than water" is actually "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb."

eachother should be one word
Boss baby wasn't that bad.
Boss baby wasn't that bad.
I reserve all rights to hate this movie simply for its premise.
I reserve all rights to hate this movie simply for its premise.
And tbh, unless as big studio is doing something experimental, they don't really have the right to make "not bad" movies

The queen "Pardoning" of Alan Turing was offensive and disgusting. There was nothing to pardon, because he didn't do anything to begin with.
The queen "Pardoning" of Alan Turing was offensive and disgusting. There was nothing to pardon, because he didn't do anything to begin with.
Pardoning doesn't imply guilt. It's just a clearing of charges.
Pardoning doesn't imply guilt. It's just a clearing of charges.
It kind of implies that he did something wrong that they're letting pass
It kind of implies that he did something wrong that they're letting pass
It really doesn't, in Turing's case it's much more of an admission of wrongdoing on the state's part.
idk, goes against every usage of the word pardon i've ever heard
idk, goes against every usage of the word pardon i've ever heard
Looks like we both have a point. I don't know enough of the specifics on Turing's case to say anything more.
RLM's Nerd Crew videos aren't funny and are nothing but the same "joke" over and over again.
RLM's Nerd Crew videos aren't funny and are nothing but the same "joke" over and over again.
The joke can get old, but channels constantly doing what Nerd Crew makes fun of unironically is sadder.
