What gloves do you use, Sunkite?
[editline]7th August 2015[/editline]
Actually, what gloves do any of you guys usE?
Right now I'm using some Lacrosse gloves (Dragon Warrior I believe). Although I'm looking for something new considering these gloves have extremely thick padding and no joints on the fingers.
This means that I can barely move my fingers and have a hard time using my wrists properly.
I'll either get some other lacrosse gloves with joints or some HEMA gloves/gauntlets.
Ah, ok then. I really really wish Black Lance still produced their gloves. I really DON'T like mitten-type gloves.
Anyone know how hard a pike is to wield compared to a musket with a bayonet. When I do my Renaissance stuff, I go as the captain, so I've never actually used a pike in battle. I go with my claymore (Scottish highlander mercenaries)
But when I do my Revolution/War Between the States I'm a lowly private/Corporal. I've trained with sticking stuff on a bayonet before.
With Napoleonic I don't even carry a gun. I'm our unit's bagpiper.

Oh yeah and I might fight a samurai later but IDK.

I can't help but notice a distinct lack of fingers on that glove.
Resolution: git gud with single handed. I like it, but I fucking suck with a couple of parts. My elbow refuses to cooperate.
Next week my group has a fight-all-day casual tourney. Time to enter as many categories as possible so I don't get knocked out in the first round and sit around all day.

the basket hilt of the rattan sword I use protects the fingers pretty well. fingers would be a good addition if you want to be more historically accurate but they don't serve any function in sca heavy.

I'd say quite a bit considering its about 6-8 meters longer, along with the fact that pikes main usage were sitting still pointing at the enemy.

not if you were a swiss pikeman or one of alexander's phalangites. they were incredibly aggressive soldiers (the swiss especially) that when needed, go on the defensive.

You sure you didn't mean offensive?
You sure you didn't mean offensive?
offensive? i'd meant to say aggressive but i guess it doesn't really matter. they're soldiers who primarily stayed on the offense/attack rather than just people who stood around with pikes that stayed on the defense.
also moustacheman, if you want to read more into the techniques of pike, i think there's several treatises around that deal with the use of the pike e.g. marozzo

Epee duel with pointed swords to first blood. The duel was in fact illegal, but carried out anyway. One of the few "real duels" caught on film.
Last Saturday I got to watch men wearing protection ram their shafts into each other for the first time, it was pretty cool. It was squeezed in at the last minute so it was only a few short rounds but it was neat.

Sorry for the large last image only resized a blurry photo of him.
Really really like the guy who had a 95% complete plate suit but rocking gym shoes anyway. :v:
Where was this, btw?
speaking of armour...
I recently got this book for 6 dollarydoos on ebay.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/G59m223.jpg[/t]
claude blair's book on european armour. it's pretty much the bible on european armour and so it's a must have if you want to understand the history (1066 to 1700) and the look of historical armour. both are intertwined imo. too many people claim their armour they own is milanese/gothic/early 15th century or whatever despite the fact they don't actually resemble the actual historical pieces at all. apart from the metallurgical qualities of steel/iron, the shape and look of armour is what distinctively sets them apart from different centuries/decades and other armourers so they're very important. anyways from what i read, it's a fantastic resource and it'd be a great companion to the knight and the blast furnace book i mentioned earlier. it's also much easier and cheaper to pick up from amazon and ebay.
also, this site: http://www.allenantiques.com/
is a good resource for gathering pics of historical arms and armour. lots of pics of things that museums don't usually take (the biggest thing would be the interior of armour).
Speaking of more armour I'm buying this for a friend:

Getting a helmet for me too, but i'll post an image when I've decided on one.

how much did it cost?
[editline]25th August 2015[/editline]
I also assume your friend is going for an Italian harness?
Actually, we can only afford the helmets right now :V
I got them very cheap from one of the biggest resellers in Sweden...40€ (bout 50-60 bucks).

here's the helmet I'm getting.
they both seem like good helms for a future first time kit.
both of them don't require a matching plate harnesses unlike some other helms.
If I ever decide to get a full harness I'll get a full suit along with it, which means I'll order the entire thing custom. Been looking at that czech guy Jiri, he can really do 16th century armour justice:

Jiri Klepac is amazing. He is fantastic at pretty much anything but mid 16th century german armour is something he's known for since it's his favorite style.
That SCA black harness looks so good, people always mistake it for top notch historical reenactment armour.
well, isn't the SCA the hardest on historical correctness? Or well, you've explained in the past how there can be differences between two communities, but here in Sweden they're the history nazis.
are you serious? here and to the extent, the usa, the sca is the exact opposite of historizal nazis. everything is incredibly laid back e.g. there was a stereotypical pirate in our sca festival last year (well beyond the sca cut off date of 1600)
it's bizarre to think of the sca being stringent on historical correctness.
Well, again, as far as I understood it here in Sweden, they represent the absolute elite of people who wnat to keep it serious.
For example, there's a big medieval festival week in Sweden, and the SCA hosts a camp there. In that camp, you're to live, breath, and eat 14th century (i think) Sweden. Absolutely no exceptions.
The first swedish mastership in HEMA was concluded just 40 minutes ago...I'll post some results later.
I had intended to go there and watch the finals, but alas, something came in the way.
This is slowly becoming an interest of mine, ever since I saw that video game kingdom come: deliverance.
Do those massive battle recreations happen like in a civil war reenactment in real life, or is it rare?
