The 50mm primes are really great. I've been wanting the sigma for well over 6 months now, so pressing that "pay now" button was the most satisfying thing. :allears:

Tried something different. Was a bitch to shoot due to not having a remote,a sturdy tripod and good lighting. Don't know if I like it or not
Was so sunny today, then it dimmed up a bit heh

I have a few winter photos, and I was wondering whether it would be a good idea to share them here. I am extremely new in terms of photography, and would mostly be interested in doing so for the purposes of criticism.

It's pretty hard to pull off good and interesting winter photo's, especially if you are a beginner. Still, it's always good to have some feedback on your photo's so just post them!

They are a bit flat when it comes to color, but I think that should be the feeling I get from it.
Cold and bitter winter.
Here is a different more extensive album: http://picasaweb.google.com/114090756477958473733/104CANON?authkey=Gv1sRgCL6t_Kn59O7GHw#

I attempted to go more for "frozen but containing a soul" rather then "frozen and bitter" but overall yes.

They are pretty dull. You should get some more interesting subjects to shoot. See it like this: you are at an exposition and some professional photographer is displaying your pictures. Would you like them? Ofcourse different people have different opinions about things so don't live by this. You should find an interesting subject, like an old person walking through the snow. Then, think about framing. Do you want the subject to be frame-filling or be just a small part of your picture.

That is partially what I was thinking about, I should probably be focusing on more interesting subjects in general and work on making the entire picture interesting as opposed to focusing on making a small central segment interesting.

Well you don't need to make your whole picture interesting as long as the subject is interesting. I see you focussed on a subject so you got that basis down. Now you need to expand on that. The problem with the subjects you got now is that they aren't interesting. Work on that. Next is framing. Like I said, think about where you want your subject to be in your picture. You can look up my thread with facepunch search. It's called something like General Photography I believe. It covers most basics you will need.

I would like to disagree with you on my current subject not necessarily being interesting. In personally find the idea of documenting nature in somewhat unusual states to be an interesting idea, but my presentation and display of the idea could be incorrect which causes you or perhaps someone else to think that it is boring. Or perhaps it really is boring, one of my primary goals when taking those pictures was indeed to simply mess around rather then focusing on a genuinely interesting topic.
Here is another album, by the way: https://picasaweb.google.com/114090756477958473733/102CANON?authkey=Gv1sRgCIK2kabY-YPA0AE#
Does anyone know what a good upgrade from a Sony a200 would be? People are starting to want to buy my photos and I really have a passion for it, so I think it's time for a better camera.
I have my eyes on the Pentax K-5 with 18-55 and 50-200 lenses for £1200, but this is a bit much and it has a few features I could do without. All I really need is a good powerful camera with a decent ISO range, a 12 or higher MP sensor, good low light performance and a fast AF. High FPS shooting would be nice too, (the Pentax does 7fps). Things I can really do without include video shooting and in camera editing, I only shoot in Aperture/Shutter Priority modes or full manual, and do all my editing in photoshop/adobe raw.
Thanks.
Unless you really need the rugged nature of the K-5 and it's fantastic weather-sealing, I would recommend the Nikon D7000 if you're going to start shooting professionally, you'll have a much wider range of lenses to choose from (even though the Pentax's aren't bad).
Get the Pentax K-x
Such a great entry level plus you can use practically ANY pentax lens on it plus the old M42 ones if you have a cheap little adapter. 4fps burst, 720p @ 24fps, Max ISO 12800, 12.4 (I think) MP sensor, 11 point AF. Has in-body image stabilization so any older lenses you have basically have stabilization for less blurry, distorted images. LOTS of little features here and there on it, if you want to enter into photography I can't say I know the most but this camera for being my first has REALLY treat me well.
ONLY gripe is that it runs of AA batteries, I purchased some AA rechargeables and a charger which last me a pretty long time, other than that good lithium batteries will hold ya off for a while, they are pricey though.
Plus you can get it in some wacky colors, or your basic ones. I have red

You can get the 18-55 and 50-200 for around $580 USD plus body if you look right.
I gotta say the red camera looks awesome.
like an old person walking through the snow.
It's so easy to fall into the trap of photographing old people under the enchanting (sometimes illusionary) assumption that they 'tell a story'.
Of course, it is often the case, but it's important to not be too exclusive with the types of people you're photographing.
A consistent variety will go a long way in improving your portfolio.

Don't be afraid to look like an idiot and sprint for 20 seconds to get ahead of the people you're walking with. Wait for them to walk towards you and snap away.
Even if they're not people you know...

Wow, thank you. The flower is originally just plain yellow but I thought that looked a bit boring so I fiddled a bit in Photoshop. That doesn't count as cheating does it? All I did was duplicate the layer, apply a blue hue and set the blend mode to Soft Light...

It isn't cheating imo.
