youth is an advantage.
moderately hipster 18-24 year old with big camera = probably an art student or some gay shit.
people are not threatened by that.
alright, on the social scale young is good. However, that didn't stop me from getting kicked out of bars for looking too young when I was a bar photographer v:fuckyou:v
professionally, old feels experienced, young is seen as amateur. Socially (towards the big city, at least), old is creepy, young is some gangster looking to steal your identity, and anything between is a child molester.
Nomatter what, a camera subjects you to scoldings by shopkeeps, accusing stares from mothers, and potentially getting mugged for your equipment. :sigh:
I guess it just depends on how you carry yourself.
And yeah I always get carded at hookah bars, its embarrassing.

roll with a crew.
im serious when you have mates and you all look like your out having a good time, you're 'that one with the camera'. people won't question you. i got kicked out of a store with my camera when it was me and my girlfriend. went back later on with some bros and the manager came up to me, curious about what kind of photography i do, etc.
Extra tips on looking Pro:
Attach your biggest lens
Always walk around with your camera in one hand and in plain sight
Bring shitloads of gear in a camera bag
Wear Bandana on your wrist

Aww man, how am I going to afford all that!? Being a photographer is so expensive these days!
[editline]16th February 2011[/editline]
so, here is my financial standpoint right now. i am just telling you guys because i am assuming that you would like some more educated, equipped young photographers out there.(i know some hate that my active camera right now is a compact film camera instead of a DSLR)
so as i was asking earlier if i should get a nikon? well i have abandoned the idea. for now. you see, i am going to save all the money i can get right now to build a gaming rig (don't flip out yet). then, as the plan goes, in the summer, i am going to get a job at my local photography development shop. 3 months of saving up minimum wage, (its $8.50 an hour here in Cali. i think) i will be able to get that nikon.
what do you think?

I genuinely love how this is slightly overexposed, looks really great. Good job.

It's called High Key
And it is fucking awesome
high key is my favourite key
low key looks total shit
This is my first attempt at merging exposures due to high contrast lighting. I think it turned out ok. Please tell me what you think.

I think you did a great job, but I'm not sure whether I like the glow around the outline of the statue, it gives it a more pronounced look I suppose.
Yeah, I should've spent a bit longer on the masking with smaller brushes.
I took the two photos out of the car window while my dad and I were stopped in traffic for a moment. Had we been on foot I probably would have moved closer and taken the shot looking up.

You really think this looks like total shit?
Looks great.
Thank you, even though I posted it before.
to be socially accepted as a photographer, you cannot look:
young
lost
confused
quiet
old
creepy
nor should you advertise your studio being in your house/basement
The first four pretty much sum me up D:
low key looks total shit
low key and high key both have their appropriate situations.

point proven. :)
low key looks total shit
Why? It just means high contrast, basically.
fairly easy, I mean cheap shitty chinese flash, an off camera cord, bedsteads and a fucking stand aren't too much nowadays.
[editline]16th February 2011[/editline]
fuck this I'm getting a real job
dont buy a real backdrop or muslin they are mad expensive, you can get a huge dustsheet and a couple of packs of dye for £20 and its just as good, i was just looking at lighting stuff and i wouldnd buy lighting stands just get some shitty second hand tripod from ebay for <£10 and the interfit umbrella holder (cheapest i saw at £15).
I'M BACK FROM THE DEAD, BITCHES

i had to sneak this post cuz my computer power cord was taken as punishment.
Do you scan your film yourself? If so what scanner do you use?
just realised my shitty nissin flash fires off my mamiya which is nice but im a but confused how i should meter it properly even with the ae prism, can i use my dslr to take a test shot to get the exposure right and make sure the flash power level and shutter speed on the mamiya is ok?
yep thats how i do it.
Here, have a couple of generic high key flower macros...

The second one is really nice.
I don't know if it's just me, but alot of photos I see today all really look the same. Same exposure, same angles, same editing.
Find someone who takes great pictures on flickr, and go through their favorites.
Should open some doors for ya.

What is it you're seeing that's all the same? any examples?
I'm pissed off my flash still hasn't arrived, ordered last Friday, posted Saturday. 4 working days max for Nireland.
