Also set everything to manual, you don't want auto-exposure changing stuff half way through the timelapse.

Also, how should I have my camera settings in order to prevent those huge ugly solar-spikes, and lens-flares for that matter. To stop the spikes coming from the sun or other light sources use a bigger aperture. Focal length really depends on what you want it to look like. Lens flares can't really be stopped but can be reduced a little by lens hoods.

are the shaft on lighting stands and tripods the same size

If I had like $2500 for anything I'd go straight towards that lens, it looks amazing. I'm not quite sure if that's what you meant by the 2.8
