Got my roll back, incoming wall.
[img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/Icj4T.jpg[/img_thumb]
I quite like this, although the crop doesn't really give it a sense of scale. It feels like the buildings extend in both directions, but I'm not sure by how much.

Has a special place right on my desk. Old girl needs a dusting I think.
Have any of you guys done night photography in the countryside? I had the idea of exploring the old, aged and abandoned through deserted and decades old if not older buildings around the countryside. I got in the car 15minutes ago, drove down the road for a bit and turned into a lane. I got out with the worry of having the full beam lights on driving my battery down and leaving me to abandon the car and walk in pitch darkness. Got ready to take a picture and I just stopped and thought "FUCK THIS IS SCARY". I'm the type who rarely get scared, but the atmosphere was pretty eerie, so I got in the car locked the door and went home. Gonna bring a torch tomorrow night and maybe one of you guys can come and hold my hand? :v:
Gonna bring a torch tomorrow night and maybe one of you guys can come and hold my hand? :v:
Blah, the torch thing make me think of Minecraft. I play that game way too much. Bring a giant flashlight and have it sit on the hood of your car or something, just to keep it comfortable.
Creepers gonna fuck my shit up, if not some mudmen/gypsies. Its eerie to look around and not be able to see infront of you, while your imagination puts you in a sort of panic. Someone else with me would probably put me at ease, gotta man up just. Fuel was low too so top it up tomorrow and try again. BLAIR WITCH BLRUAGLARUAHAR
bring a bike. one of those folding ones from top gear when they were in japan. [editline]26th January 2011[/editline] the film will arrive tonight! I will see if i can get them on flickr when they get here.

i'm just saying that your bike doesn't need a battery, so it won't break down. and you could get one of those wind up radio lights. it keeps the boogie man away and provides light.
184/365 - nothing interesting at all, just a quick shot to make today's 365. Taken specifically for daijitsu. :v: I feel like I should bring this up. I favor high key, but it doesn't mean I don't understand low-key - I just can't execute it very well. Here is a great example of low-ish key.
I would have to say I favour low-key Youth Games Fisheye #1 by jhaslehurst, on Flickr IMG_5229 by jhaslehurst, on Flickr Arduino by jhaslehurst, on Flickr it's really annoying because I love the low-key / high-key look but at school we had it drilled into us that you want a perfectly level histogram.
it's really annoying because I love the low-key / high-key look but at school we had it drilled into us that you want a perfectly level histogram.
Welcome to the University of Facepunch :pseudo:
I just applied creator and copyright metadata to my entire lightroom catalogue, took all of 30 seconds. (creative commons). [editline]27th January 2011[/editline] Oh, I'm also getting 5 rolls back from the lab tomorrow, so hopefully I will be able to a) catch up on my 52 and b) post some content for once.
Any chance we could have more active feedback in this thread? Because nobody seems to actively critique.
Here's some more I took over the Christmas Holidays: Manor Farm Woods by edwin.quast, on Flickr Ciara and Josh by edwin.quast, on Flickr
Oh wow that second one looks awesome. I don't know whether I like the tree though, I mean it fits but I don't know what to focus on. The people, or the tree. On another note, I am starting to really realize the importance of proper lighting. I am actually thinking about trying to find me a good starter set of lighting equipment.
Any chance we could have more active feedback in this thread? Because nobody seems to actively critique.
I think it's a give/get relationship, I don't think I have seen you give much feedback so asking for feedback seems to be hypocritical, that applies to everyone, not just yourself (correct my if I'm wrong). for me a fair few photos posted in the thread look alright, but not great and I can't really put my finger on what's wrong with the photos. Also I find that I'm only able to give strong feedback on street photography as that's where most of my expertise lays.
Oh wow that second one looks awesome. I don't know whether I like the tree though, I mean it fits but I don't know what to focus on. The people, or the tree.
Thanks man. Yeah, I wasn't too sure how to crop it in the end, so just left it as it was. It was raining and we had a 3 hour walk back from the pub through the fields. I didn't want to stop my subjects for too long and get them soaked for a perfect picture. I don't know, I like it. Maybe if they were slightly more to the right, and my girlfriend didn't cut off the tree in the background?
ok, here goes nothing, as a disclaimer this is only my opinion and could quite well be completely wrong (in your opinion). You really want feedback so here I go. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5094/5390783318_3004c77d35_z.jpg[/img_thumb] I don't really like the lighting, it just looks dim. I think if I were to photograph this I would get the ISO cranking, In most cases grainy photos suite the vibe of these sorts of gigs. The images also don't look very sharp, if you raised your ISO you would be able to get a deeper depth of field which I think would add a whole heap to your images. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5258/5390161975_4296c260f0_z.jpg[/img_thumb] I'm also not really a fan of the front-on angle in your images, it makes everything look really flat. I don't know how much you were able to walk around but getting behind the band up in the stage always looks pretty cool, as does putting your camera right at the base / head of the guitar and shooting up / down the line. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5293/5390162393_e72886718a_z.jpg[/img_thumb] this image is confusing to look at as the guitarist in the background is substantially brighter than the in focus guitarist in the foreground, creating tension in the viewers eyes. I think that if you moved closer to the stage and focused on the guitarist in the background, with the foreground guitarist as a vague, blurry figure it would be a much more interesting shot. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5138/5390770452_b6bdc75c7d_z.jpg[/img_thumb] similar to above, also the foldback wedge on the ground has way more light than the guitarist, again creating tension. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5013/5390769958_eca848f7d1_z.jpg[/img_thumb] This looks blurry / out of focus. Use a higher ISO to allow for a faster shutter speed and a higher aperture. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5292/5390750338_6bde1b333e_z.jpg[/img_thumb] same as before, bright thing that isn't the subject doesn't make sense. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5095/5390141895_076aef85bc_z.jpg[/img_thumb] this is getting better, but your angle is a tad off and it still looks really soft. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5057/5390141633_fae80d0fcf_z.jpg[/img_thumb] I would crop the top off of this one, black pixels aren't doing anyone any favours. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5094/5390458924_bfce4ce18c_z.jpg[/img_thumb] I find that again, the angle is just so same-y and not all that interesting. as a "pro" you need to get the angle that your average punter in the stands can't get. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5094/5390458916_02103f049b_z.jpg[/img_thumb] other than the softness, I love this image. the rim lighting on the hands really make them pop from the background. the angle is also fresh which makes it fairly interesting to look at. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5013/5390458910_188db1ff70_z.jpg[/img_thumb] this also feels soft, if it were sharp and you pulled back the highlights from the guitar it would look way better. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5178/5390458894_8010e1f405_z.jpg[/img_thumb] be selective! out of the 10(?) images that you posted more than half look near-on exactly the same. your post would be much more concise and interesting if you chose 1 front on guitar shot, not 6. [img_thumb]http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5300/5390458898_be93e43af6_z.jpg[/img_thumb] same as above for softness, however I do like the angle of this one as it portrays a sense of depth, with multiple "layers" of distance. don't be disheartened, they are better than what most would do, when I give feedback I like to give useful feedback and that can come across as harsh. [editline]27th January 2011[/editline] wow, my post looks formatted all weird
I took these in 2008 for a project called 'shooting the detectives'. None of them are particularly great, and my editing was even worse back then than it is today, but it was fun playing with shadows and lights etc. It's my father by the way. man, as a series of images they really create the eerie atmosphere that you were going for, good work! I love the shadowplay. Maybe if you toned down the contrast a *tiny* bit they would look better.

I think that the lighting of the venue has given you a hard time. also with this one the angle is interesting, it certainly doesn't feel flat.
You've given me untold inspiration and the drive to work my damned hardest to get the best images I possibly can in future. I found myself in a constant flurry shooting on M/AV, and the best shots I took were generally lucky, although reflecting on them, I can at least start with a rough idea on the settings by viewing the EXIF data on the best shots and going from there.
