The Creative Photography Thread - If It Ain't Bokeh, Don't Fix It

So today in the dark room I spent over an hour creating and using dodging tool for my picture. I had 4 different sections all burned in with different times over the original image. What do I find out after I take it out of the stop bath?
It looked like an over the top HDR picture except I managed to do it with film. Everyone thought it was amazing but it still looked filter raped. It was a really good example of how burning and dodging can really save a lot of pictures aside from the HDR rape look.

In his defense, some people from this thread posted some less than respectful comments. If you've got nothing nice to say, add criticism. Don't just tell them that it sucks. Many of you succeeded in making yourselves look terribly immature.
I honestly find his photograph very well composed, and he didn't overdo the HDR as much as some other images, such as the one with the car in the desert that bopie posted a while ago. In all seriousness, I've never seen an HDR image that I've actually found visually appealing. Going HDR takes an incredible amount of contrast out of an image, and instead of going from one thing to another, your stuck looking at this huge gray blob.

Something I am trying to convey to him, composition and such is nice but the HDR..

I didn't really mean you, though I don't particularly agree with you on the "HDR done right" deal. While HDR was created for the specific purpose of light unity, that really shouldn't stop people from using it for reasons that they find nice. I personally found his use ugly, but I know that the original artist is very proud of what he has done. And judging from the comments, others are quite fond of his work as well.
The thing that was bothering me was the fact that most of the commenters lashed out in jealousy. People weren't upset with the fact that he overdid HDR, they were upset with the fact that he was getting positive feedback for overdoing HDR. You shouldn't base criticism off the fact that something is being praised for taking a different route.

He wasn't getting positive feedback, he was having his ego cushioned by attention whores and other people without taste. I could go plaster my pictures all over groups, favorite every picture I see, and write 'beautiful shot' as a comment on random people's entire photostreams, and I guarantee you I could get just as many poorly formatted glittering HTML comments back. People weren't upset that he was getting praise, they were upset because he was getting empty flattery disguised as praise. I [i]hate[/i] when jealousy is used as an out for criticism, is it really that hard to accept that something is wrong? Flickr is an image hoster that breeds stagnant praise, you need a place like facepunch for people to speak their minds. If someone says something to me on flickr, and they have a flower macro with 88 comments and a set called 'explored', I usually ignore them.
You need to be able to see the line between jealousy and real criticism, otherwise you go about chalking up everything that hurts your ego in the slightest bit as other people's jealousy. The same could be said about flattery in the sense that the person wants something back, like attention from you because they made you feel good. In the end [i]it all feeds your ego and clouds your perception.[/i] This is something that I really learned fast when I played with drugs, but that's another story.

Not saying any individuals are at fault, but it used to be that people would tell me why I suck, now I get a couple of artistics (i try to be conservative on giving those out myself) every now and then and maybe someone saying 'awesome work! tell me how you did it!'
If I envy a particular style I tend to have a hard time finding anything negative about it, ala high key.

You're definitely right defending most of the negative crits, but most of apcragg's comments were focused much more on putting him down, and less on improvements.

Saying it was a snapshot was a severe understatement. We all know that this picture may have had a chance without the HDR, but targeting the subject matter was way out of the question, especially since he did a decent job at capturing it.
The fact of the matter is that people will always lean one way or another. If you like something, you're not going to want to point out areas that need work. And when you hate something, you'll want to try your best to point out what's wrong with it. This is the unfortunate truth, and in end only damages the artist. People need to get a better grasp on what it is to be constructive, and to put personal feelings aside when judging a piece.

I like this image, the "soft" look really shows on the fur. The blur on it seems fitting somehow too...

We get out to the location, start shooting, and the whole time he's moping. I'm trying to be encouraging, throwing out ideas and conversational hooks, yet he still kinda shrugs me off. He definitely wasn't having fun. He starts showing me these elaborate concept-editorial fashion shots at old buildings etc, that obviously took more than a 5D2 and 50 1.4. He mentioned how other photogs were more prone to being rude, and I asked if that was discouraging, to which he replies, "Bitches get shit done" - implying that I was too passive, or something. [i]It's free work from an amateur to another amateur[/i], and [b]he[/b] came to me. This kid needs to re-evaluate himself. He expected me to do everything while he sat there like an empty body. So, after leaving a "semi-constructive" comment on one of his HDR rape photos which had pages of "awards", he went onto my Flickr and gave me a nice comment on the first photo in my photostream. Needless to say, I couldn't resist.
