I like number 2 the best. It's just looks really lively to me. I like photos that are lively and full of life. :) If you catch my drift... [editline]9th March 2011[/editline] Hopefully weather clears up. I honestly can't do anything since there's hail flying into my eyes and blinding me every second outside....
NO SPLIT TONING AND HIGH KEY IN BOPiES WORK AARRRGH MY LIFE IS FLYING APART
NO SPLIT TONING AND HIGH KEY IN BOPiES WORK AARRRGH MY LIFE IS FLYING APART
It's good to have a variety of styles. I know you're joking but it sounds ridiculous to be honest.
Messing around with tones some more. Going for a much more subtle approach than I once was. If anyone has any tips on editing more darker images, please tell me, I'm having a lot of trouble with getting the look I'm seeing in my head. I'm trying to get a washed out look, but it just doesn't seem to work too well with darker images. One of my favourite photographs of all time.... the first aerial shot, taken of San Fran after the earthquake. http://www.howtobearetronaut.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/San_Francisco_in_ruin_edit2.jpg I've got a good friend who does aerial kite photography, I'll need to post some of his work some time. It's awesome.

This is a picture I made for school, the assignment is to edit a photo in a creative way. I am not a photographer in any way, in fact I don't like it very much but I had to do it, so this was pretty much my first real artsy photo.

:siren:
effective immediately, a "Look but do not touch" clause is now in effect.
:siren: In light of the recent barrage of both negative yet constructive and purely destructive commentary back and forth with Chris Salmon on his HDR image, I have come to realize that I nor anyone else should be allowed to release a link without risk of consequence. I know we hold a general policy of "if it happens outside the forum it isn't our concern", but from this point on if it regards things such as flickr or deviant art pages, you WILL be held liable for your commentary as a representative of facepunch and a representative of this community of photographers and artists. People found to be assaulting someone will be treated with bans here reflecting their actions outside, doubled. It isn't raiding if no one says "dude let's all go spam this page" but I won't stop to treat it as such. I admit I posted the link and said something rather mean about it, but that's the general stance around here; you guys would have thought the same and we all can have a laugh to ourselves. At no time did I instruct anyone to go and be jerks, and at first no one was, but several people tore into him with the intent of just saying "this is bad and you should feel bad", and those people know who they are.
So, after leaving a "semi-constructive" comment on one of his HDR rape photos which had pages of "awards", he went onto my Flickr and gave me a nice comment on the first photo in my photostream. Needless to say, I couldn't resist. APCragg, what the hell. Adius, you tried to make points but ended up sounding like an ass at the end. Cueball, you didn't say much [that hasn't been deleted?], illicited discussion but wasn't belligerent. OK. Kieran and Sam Norris, (not sure if sam's one of us), thought out and to the point.
you could have tried harder to convince people you're unaffected by the criticism (which mind you was pretty politely put) come on.
I'm not sure who this guy is, but he made a point. Chris Salmon did nothing but present himself as backed into a corner, not the best way to go about fixing a situation or starting a proper conversation; it reached the boiling point where he laid all of what he is out in a big message, and whilst his approach may have been an issue nothing would have been an issue had several of us taken the opportunity to bother him as such. Whoever informed the guy about the forum and the posts, it was the right course of action and helped get things done. I feel like I'm backpedaling a marathon by being all nice right now after my blunt presentation of his link but I needed a kick right now. Also Bopie, your brother's dancing was awesome, is he doing anything particular with breakdancers? I saw some pretty good popping in there.
You're definitely right defending most of the negative crits, but most of apcragg's comments were focused much more on putting him down, and less on improvements. Saying it was a snapshot was a severe understatement. We all know that this picture may have had a chance without the HDR, but targeting the subject matter was way out of the question, especially since he did a decent job at capturing it. The fact of the matter is that people will always lean one way or another. If you like something, you're not going to want to point out areas that need work. And when you hate something, you'll want to try your best to point out what's wrong with it. This is the unfortunate truth, and in end only damages the artist. People need to get a better grasp on what it is to be constructive, and to put personal feelings aside when judging a piece.
That was me. I'm 15 if you're wondering so I have some pretty angsty. I can be a bit (A lot) of an asshole sometimes. Live and learn? [editline]10th March 2011[/editline] Oh I just went back and read it. I feel bad now.
I think we all learned a valuable lesson from the whole thing. I know it definitely made me take a step back and evaluate how I was giving out criticisms, and by the looks of the last page, there have been alot more thoughtful crits. @MisterM: The cow was actually in that spot when I got there. There was another beside it, but wham I approached it it went ballistic and ran off. The cow in the image just kind of sat there and stared at me, along with all of the cows in the background.
i don't even leave comments on flickr v:v:v

The close up on my face was taken with the camera on a tripod using a remote shutter ($3 from DX) with it in manual focus. Took awhile to get it just right! The aperture was set at f/9.5 to get a decent focus buffer, since I was shooting so close with a 90mm prime lens. Also, that sentence was so confusing. How do you shoot behind you with a camera? There's nothing wrong with not using manual mode all of the time, but if you want to be able to get the exact exposure/effect you're trying to convey you'll need to learn the basics of shooting manual. When shooting dynamic subjects, manual mode can be my worst nightmare.
Dai I thought about leaving a comment but I would have realised it would have been pointless, leading to arguments and after refreshing and seeing his replies I was glad I didn't. That is confusing now that I read it back, I mean't I was using the SB-700 in manual mode, so it was either too bright or too dark, no TTL off camera so its a lot of trial and error. Manual is a pain in the arse for shooting dynamic subjects is right!
BUT it does burn me when they say lomo pictures suck. i am very proud of this picture and people seem to like it. fuckin hipsters stereotyped my film compact and its not my fair :saddowns:
Right now, I'm feeling pretty happy about being lazy in photography. I'm happy that I wasn't involved in this. I honestly don't see anything wrong with Chris Salmon's pictures, it's just how intense the HDR is done on them. It's highly overlooked, probably due to it being an odd 90mm. I started off with a Canon 450D and a Sigma 70-300mm, then a Sigma 18-fiftysomething piece of crap and then got the Tamron lens, followed by my 7D, then the Canon 28mm, and my most recent purchase last month was a Speedlite 580EXII which I have no idea how to expose for not manually, so I can't really help you with flash metering :P. Just want to put the 90mm out there, the focus barrel is buttery smooth and easy to grip with the rubberized texture. The Autofocus to manual focus switch isn't a switch at all, it's a clutch mechanism. You pull the focus ring towards you to go into manual focus, IT IS AWESOME. I much prefer this design over the standard miniature plastic switches that you have to search for on the lens, there's no need to remove your eye from the viewfinder when you can just push/pull the lens. Autofocus is very fast and precise, albeit slower than my 28mm which is understandable. Image quality is super sharp. Look up some reviews. I did tons of research and ended up landing on it.
