Best part is getting to peek around in RC.
speaking of, don't post in the RC except the gold member thread.

Has anyone tried water drop photography? Once you've got a decent setup you can get really creative with it.
Here I used a sheet of rainbow paper behind the water. The reflections

Eh. Drop the border on the last one.
We don't seem to be too fond of borders around these parts.

Sorry they're old shots - I got into the habit of adding borders for my A level stuff
I'll leave off the borders on future posts.
I hate to sound stupid or noobish, but I am.
I never take people photography or portraits. Can I get some basic shooting tips and techniques for good portraits? My dad has a really nice 80-200mm f/2.8 telephoto that gets some good bokeh and crisp shots. Just want some help with technique! What are some good things to try? My girlfriend and I are taking pictures at the park tomorrow and I don't want the same boring "looking right at her from 10 feet away look while she smiles" look.
While I don't like this girl's photo style (as in the super light contrast and sometimes too much light leak and lens flare), I do like her angles. Plus she used my girlfriend in her pics.

Anyways, those are just a couple of this other girls shots. I just kind of like the composition of them, and they aren't entirely boring. Any tips?

Also, my girlfriend is not a hipster. The photographer made her and the other chick dress like hippies, lol.
~ Avoid direct sunlight at all costs. Use shade if it's sunny, you'll notice that about the shots you posted.
~ There are two major types of bokeh, there is the bokeh you get from long focal lengths, and then there is the bokeh you get from large apertures. Generally, 'aperture bokeh' looks better than telephoto bokeh, which kind of 'muddles' the background up. I know you aren't out to buy gear, but an aperture greater than f/2 is optimal. You can get some good stuff at 80 2.8 though. The trick is to be mindful of camera~subject~background-distance relationship. You want to be far away enough from the subject to get the whole body, or atleast torso+head, but close enough that you can still add a subtle blur, which also depends on having at least 10 feet behind the subject for the background. You won't get much bokeh at any focal length if there is a flat wall behind her.
~ Take the shot and move on. Don't dwell on a single pose for too long or else you get caught up in perfecting the details and end up with a memory card full of the same shitty shot.
~ Overexpose ever so slightly. It really brings out the colors, and it's easier to darken a photo later on, rather than try to brighten one up.
~ There is only so much I can type, real knowledge comes from experience. Alot of times it's extremely easy to look at a photo and think 'i could do that' and you end up failing, HARD. There is alot more than meets the eye and it really just boils down to practice. Trial and error is the way to go. The point of saying this is that if you don't live up to your own expectations, don't get discouraged. Just try again. And who knows, you might get some amazing stuff, just keep an open mind.

I think I made a few of these a little too bright, but maybe I just think that because this has been the first really sunny day in months.

^^ This is the first time I've used selective coloring....I figured this was probably the best subject out of the photos I have in my collection recently. The contrast is a little harsh in this one though....typical afternoon shot.
MAN those shots are crisp

Haha, I'm not really insecure about it. Her and I are just like the farthest things from flower children so I thought I'd point that out.
Otherwise, thanks so much for the tips. I don't expect to be able to get the hang of it over night or just by reading about it. I know it takes time and practice to be able to control the way your pictures turn out. I just want to be somewhat original with my photography (who doesn't?). I wish there were some more places around town that were actually safe to go to that had more interesting scenery. All the parks around here are boring and overdone. Plus, living in Florida doesn't offer much in terms of cool geography.

I really like your stuff Roll_Program.
You seem to always have the same locations in your photos, but for me, they're always new and exciting.
Also, I just got back from Berlin.
I got some good shots I think - mainly street stuff.

We're pretty tolerant in here. 'Hipsters' are okay, but we draw the line at over-the-top processing. You don't have to prove yourself or your associates. That said, I recognize that those photos aren't representative of your girlfriend.
Also, one of the many skills in photography is working with what you have. That includes locations. First you start saying there isn't anywhere to take pictures, then your lens isn't good enough, then it's your camera, then it's your subject, then its the weather, etc. It's an excuse trap for putting off 'getting better.' It builds character if you go out of your way to find 'hidden beauty' in your surroundings. And I don't mean taking a picture of a rusty mailbox at a crazy angle, I'm talking about presenting your scenery in a flattering way.

The rule he broke was the one made the most obvious in the rule thread, I don't want to leak it, but, honestly, you have to be pretty dumb to not realise you're breaking that rule after reading the rules 3 times.
