I'll give him some constructive criticism then;
The image is straight forward. It's plain. It's documentary. It's not the type you'd see in an art expo, it's the type you'd see in a newspaper or a photo album.
What, for me, makes an image special is the composition. I'm not talking about this rule of thirds bull, I'm thinking more - play with lines. For me photography is like drawing, a line in an image must paint the image that our mind perceives as elegant.
Lets take one of my old shots for example;
[img_thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1467131/tree2.jpg[/img_thumb]
Notice how the bridge points from where the eye falls first, towards the tree and creates a feeling of smoothness, promptly contrasted by the tree.
What you could do would be to get up as close as you could (it would help if you told me what lenses you have) and see what you can "draw" with the Tower Hill station. Perhaps lead the eye towards an object, a person or just the natural curvature of nature.
When you got that nailed, see if you can get some natural lighting and color on the right spots. Looking at the photograph I don't believe there's much you can do on that aspect so that's okay.
Yeah I understand it's a plain photo, just wanted to test out night shots handheld. That was literally my first time out with a camera, over time I'm sure I will get better.
Good spirit mate, glad you're mastering the technical.
I'm sorry but is it really necessary to state that it's your first time out with a camera? That shouldn't really be an excuse. It sounds like you're trying to cushion yourself from criticism by saying it, like you're insecure about your work. Your photo's don't have to be amazing, mine aren't and I've been toying with photography for over a year and a half. Even if it's your first time using a 'proper' camera, I don't understand what it matters. Just take pictures, learn as you go, and enjoy. Don't worry so much about being criticized, everyone is.
/rant
no, it means people can give you tips on how to improve from your starting point
Juice, you're projecting your own insecurities again. In fact you're doing the exact same thing. :v:
But seriously, letting people know where you're coming from is overall helpful. I think it's perfectly reasonable to state that it's a person's first time.
I just see it so often. Like, I know I'm not great, and I need a lot more time. But lots of times I just highly doubt that it's really their first time picking up a camera and taking a picture. Could be wrong. Sorry for being so cynical.

First time I touched something close to an actual camera. Please do tell me what I did right and what I did wrong (if I even did anything right).
And this last one is awesome, 3cm from the leaf, can see the details of the little bug when fullsize :toot:
Those are some juicy sharp textures you're getting. You seem to get the grasp of it quite well for a first timer. I find the blurred foreground distracting on the chain and window bars? Try to keep it in focus so a viewer can follow the lines up to it, and have something in focus to conclude looking at, if that makes sense? Just because you can go wide open doesn't mean you should a lot of the time, play with the perspective, I think if you took it straight on it would seem a bit claustrophobic. Think like that and your creativity will go wild.

Fantastic Nonikai.
You're getting the hang of composition now.
I've been without a DSLR for about 3 or so weeks? Not sure if I'll ever see how well my shots look on the bigscreen from a 5D Mark II *cough Jaanus cough* but I got my D7000 earlier this week and slowly am getting used to it. Took a few minutes of videos and got some stills as well, my ratio of shots to keepers is extremely poor, but its nice to be back again.
