Well I just finished pulling and adjusting the photographs off of my new camera. I've accumulated a good 50+ photos the last week or so and I went through and picked my favorites to upload for you guys to see and let me know what your thoughts are. These were taken on my first DSLR, a Canon EOS Rebel T3 with the standard 18-55mm Lens.

Doing photos like this seem to be really difficult because framing them takes more time than anything else. I wanted to really capture the textures from the steel appliances and contrast them (I guess that's the word to use) with the textures of the ceramic tiles on the wall.

It's a great idea. The shot is really cool too, but my one gripe is the lighting on the ferret's face. The shot would be perfect if the right-side of his face was lit better. Obviously it's a spur of the moment thing so that's out of your control.

Pretty standard snapshot. It's not particularly interesting. It could be helped significantly if the ferret was shifted a bit to the left and downwards. He's a bit too close to the top edge of the frame.

It's another standard snapshot, but I'm really digging the desaturated feel of the photograph. The framing is pretty solid. I think a few flaws are that some objects run off the shot. Of course you can't get everything in the shot and keep it looking this way, but something that stands out to me are the controls for the stove towards the bottom left. They are half off the frame and it's bothering me. It feels like the stove is the key focal point and to cut it off messes that up a bit.

It's a bit underexposed. I also think it's a bit unbalanced. The pointer of the scale should be angled farther down (so more towards the center). I'm thinking if you had it pointing at 2.5 or 3 it would help balance the shot better. I'm liking how the rest of the picture is blurred, so it really helps point you towards the subject. I like it, however, it's not a particularly interesting subject.

Ah, macro photography. I love macro shots, but this shot isn't really interesting. It's the standard first few macro shots. The shallow depth of field shot of some sort of horizontal surface. There's nothing you could have really done on your end. It's a pretty boring subject.

Awesome. This is getting better. It's interesting. It could be made better if the depth of field was a bit deeper. The subject is the ends of the white thing, but some of them are slightly out of focus because the dof is so narrow. Stop down a bit with the aperture. It's also a tad underexposed. I like the darkness of it, but it's just a tad bit too dark.

I really like the idea. I've actually been debating this one over in my head. I keep thinking the bug might need to be bigger so as to make it more prominent. Someone might glance over it and think it's just a shot of some grass, but I also feel that if the bug is bigger it makes it the subject of the shot; that's not what you were going for here. You obviously can't control the size of the bug, but I think I like it a lot this way. It really captures the loneliness of an empty highway. Good job.

Like you said it's a pretty generic shot of a water drop, but I really like it. The texture on the water is great. I also like how the water just runs into the background with no visible edge (to a cup or bowl or something). Again, I really like it.

In this picture we were about 10 stories off the ground in an abandoned school building. Just took it on my phone camera. I'll upload some actual decent photos later.
I finally got my black and white film back, here's some of the best ones I got.

By the way, for anyone looking for places to urban explore in their area I'd like to reccomend a few sites:
Places all over the world: http://www.uer.ca
Places mostly in the US: http://www.opacity.us/locations/region/us/
I've found a few places through these two, and they've been fairly accurate in describing the locations.
fairly well known
So I had some weird ass idea to take photos from the other end of a tube of Pringles.
I would have had a hand reach in but it was only me, the camera and the tube of Pringles.

I just realized that you guys, in some way, shaped my life by getting me involved in photography.
That's pretty cool :D

Also Jackie Chan.
it's always crazy thinking about stuff like that, often the smallest decisions have the largest and most profound impacts on our lives. For me the reason I am where I am today (photographically) is because (1) I chose not to switch out of the subject at the beginning of last year and (2) I decided tos tart meeting up with some guys from flickr on a regular basis.
Long time, no contribution.

Oh she's preeeettttyyyyyyy :P And well lit too haha. Professionally speaking are the blown highlights an acceptable thing or is that technically a mistake? I don't mind myself, but I remember that's something that you aren't supposed to do?
Edito: Or is it a stylistic preference?
Photography is and always will be an art, not a science. There are no set rules as to what will make a photo 'perfect'. There are only guidelines that exist to help push people in the general direction of taking nice photos.
In this instance, the general guideline is the you should generally try to avoid blowing the highlights in your images. Does the fact that the highlights are blown detract from the image though? in this instance my opinion is that no, it doesn't, so therefore this guideline is irrelevant.
I think it sort of detracts from it. Instead of looking at her face I'm looking at the large streak of white.
