Besides, taking a P3 mask will protect you pretty well as long as it's not caked in dust over the floor. Then you just make a swift call to Enviromental Health and get the fuck out of there.
Hope the diagnosis comes out OK though, B-Hazard
don't worry, b-hazard doesn't have cancer, or any asbestos related disease, he has his title for a reason
How do you guys take photos of people? I mean if you don't know them, do you ask them? or do you click and run? I saw last week there was some poor guy sitting, some girl just came took pic of him, I thought it's kinda rude and bad. What do you do?

I live in Northern Ireland so asking for pictures is by far not a great idea, don't have the balls to do it right now. If they're elderly they'd probably appreciate a bit of conversation and not mind if they aren't grumpy. A bit of conversation would be a good start, sad fact is quite a lot of elderly people don't have much contact with people and are pretty lonely characters.
Having a more compact camera helps, a traditional SLR style body is very imposing to people.
asking people (and having an SLR) in a big city like Chicago is always kind of dicey.
First of all if one of the dozens of professional homeless people see you with the camera they'll start asking you for spare change. Announce you only trade currency in the form of orphan's tears, and present a vial of salty water and glare at them with all of your rage.
Obviously a nice camera is a big target for anyone looking to yoink people's stuff. Wear five or six camera straps, around your neck, waist, over one shoulder, and finally wrapped around your wrist. Maybe strap a padlock onto one of them to make it more daunting.
Approaching someone is varied depending on who it is. If it is a fine young lady, say "Excuse me miss!". When she turns around, light your face up with a smile, wait two seconds, and say "PERFECT! Might I ask you if you could pose for a picture, just ten seconds of your time?". Refrain from laughing in an evil manner and/or stroking your collection of padlocks if/when she says yes.
If it is the truly homeless, go sit with them, but don't have your camera out. Talk for a bit, ask how the weather's been, offer to go grab a bite at the mcdonald's they're sitting right in front of. Probably why they're there. Tell them you're looking to find interesting people and that's why you were brought to them; get their story, trade some jokes, then ask for a few pictures in exchange for a few more bucks for a later meal. Note: do not at any point ask them if they saw the latest episode of jersey shore. Alternatively, ask them about jersey shore first and foremost; if they know what it is it's probable that they are a 'professional' and just come out to the city to be homeless and swindle spare change at a moderate success rate. I once met a man who drove a lexus to being a hobo.
Same goes for elderly, but you do not have to feed them; they will likely feed you, offsetting the meal you bought for the homeless guy earlier. Be aware of 'professional' elderly people, who come out to the city just to be old and get people to talk to them.

You misunderstand, I was suggesting he should.
j/k.
why joke
When I'm out taking some street shots there's normally 2 ways I take photos of people.
The first way I just stand there in plain site and line up my shot and take it, nobody expects some 16 year old kid to be taking photos of them and you are able to quite easily hide in plain sight.
The second way if I want a 'real' portrait of someone is I just politely ask them 'hey, do you mind if I take your portrait, I'm a student with an interest in photography', A suprisingly large number of people will say yes, and if they say no just apoligise for wasting their time and move on. If they do say yes just take the shot, be polite, and then thank them for their time. If they're interested I would also give them my business card so they can see the photo after it's developed / uploaded.

P3 masks will only protect you from extreme exposure, asbestos gets onto your clothes and stays there, so you will basically get exposed once you take the mask off when your out of there. Apart from that I've neglected wearing a mask in a lot of places.

Hopefully don't :v:, I'm sure I've been exposed before though which I why I'm getting checked.
People used to use asbestos for table cloths.
You'll be fine.
there's a sun tan place which was filled with asbestos, i took photos for b-hazard
Yeah I guess. Who else is doing a 365 at the moment as I feel like starting a 365 project thread?
Before I stopped mine, I was planning on resizing all of them to 200px wide and putting it altogether as a fast-playing GIF to drop off in the c.photo thread when I would have completed the whole 365 days. At least have a Flickr set you can just link people too, It would be too tedious any other way. Especially keeping track of, and updating a thread.
For maybe the first week or so I started mine, I posted daily in the thread, but after awhile I just started posting the ones I was proud of.

I've been thinking about it for a while. The only problem is that I'm quite often not even in the same city as my computer D:
Guess I could change the rules a bit and say the picture has to be taken on that day, but can be delayed up to, say, a week in being posted
[editline]22nd June 2011[/editline]
was also thinking of trying one picture every week for a year instead
Yeah the whole point is to take a picture everyday.
It has no matter when it's uploaded.
I guess I'm doing an unintentional 365 then.
Crap. Loading film into my SLR and I wound the leader back into the canister. :(

http://www.adorama.com/BLFLR.html
Yeah, or you could just use a short (6" is long enough) piece of scrap film, lick the emulsion side, insert into can face down, twist the roll until you feel it grab, and pull it back out. It's what I've had to do.

Jellyfish photos always look nice. I think it's the exotic subject, and blue/orange contrast.

I'm using film right now so I can't upload them until I get them developed.
I haven't posted anything in ages and I finally have some time to upload things. C&C welcome as always.

Well I depart 8AM tomorrow, destination Italy. Stopping in Switzerland, the alps, france, germany. Brought 90GB of storage, shooting entirely in RAW. Expecting to take around 5,000 shots :L
I was messing around, and decided to do a panorama.
