I love the MIG-25/31 just for how huge and boxy they are. It really doesn't look like it should be as fast as it is.
Speaking of intakes, I kind of like the F-4X design with the huge intakes. Shame it never went anywhere, because Mach-3 capable Phantoms would have been great.

Actually i have nothing against boxy design (especially considering that aesthetics is hardly the most important thing in any military hardware, planes included). It's just i don't like the mig-25 intakes for their very sharp-edged shape and the fact that they look too big compared to the size of the hull. Those of the f4-x, on contrary, look really cool with their complicated and rounded shape, and, more importantly, they fit the overall design of the plane.

Well, the MiG-25 is basically a pair of crazy powerful engines strapped to a cockpit so you can fly it, going almost as fast as the fuckin' SR-72, while still being combat-capable too. Fuckin' plane is insane.
can't maneuver for shit though
can't maneuver for shit though
It's an interceptor, it doesn't need to maneuver.

It's basically two big-ass engines lassoed together with a chair and some surfaces attached so it can move a little bit.

Mach 3 phantom....
So basically a brick traveling at Mach 3
Pictures and words cannot describe the awkward angles that plane has.
[editline]14th June 2016[/editline]
The mig-25 is a classic example of American paranoia though. It was the plane that was supposedly super advanced and would shoot down everything and even had mind-reading controls...wait that was the Clint Eastwood movie.... but in any case they overestimated that plane's capabilities

Ya iirc a soviet defector flew a MIG over to Japan and all the American scientists and engineers jizzed themselves because they wanted to know why the wings were so large then they just found out it weighed a lot and needed big wings lol

Eh, wasn't this one of the heaviest and most ungainly interceptors ever made because they had to use steel everywhere in its construction because they couldn't afford titanium?
[editline]15th June 2016[/editline]
I'm pretty sure when the West got their hands on an example they were shocked to find so much steel in it.

maybe not the best source for things, but the author has one hell of a sense of humor
Theoretically, the MiG-25 could top Mach 3.2, but the throttles were redlined at Mach 2.8 in what seems like a desperate act of self-preservation by the plane. Above speeds of 2,000 miles per hour, the Tumansky engines began to transform. The sheer power of air rushing into the intakes at such speeds totally overwhelmed the fuel pumps. No longer capable of limiting their own flow, fuel would just be dumped into the combustion chamber at an uncontrollable rate. Air would begin to speed past the turbine compressors, turning the engines into ramjets.
i'm not sure how well its to be believed that the soviets accidentally created a turbo-ramjet engine but it sure makes for a good story

How 'bout some new hauls from the land down under?

Also to lighten up the mood, remember the case in Australia where they found 3D Printed gun parts at a crime scene, as well as some murder scenes? The finally caught one of the guys involved in it! Good job, boys in blue. Hopefully you guys can keep up this streak of gun bust this year. They have been busting quiet a few gun-runners recently, including one of the guys who was building some fairly high quality machine pistols and assault rifles.
For mostly being pretty reprehensible, home-made weaponry sure is fascinating

Wasn't the lightning the only plane to have intercepted a U2?
Wasn't the lightning the only plane to have intercepted a U2?
A Su-9 attempted to intercept a U2 in the 1960s U2 Gary Powers incident
Another Soviet aircraft, a newly manufactured Su-9 in transit flight, also attempted to intercept Powers' U-2. The unarmed Su-9 was directed to ram the U-2 but missed because of the large differences in speed (the Su-9 flew above Mach 1.1, while the U-2 flew at approximately Mach 0.6).
The story goes a Lightning intercepted a Harrier that kept flying after the pilot bailed out but I've never seen any evidence of it.

There are a few Lightnings at Bruntingthorpe proving grounds, they do a fast taxi a couple times a year. Pity they don't take off.
