Mine resistant vehicles are cool
A mine resistant convertible...
At least they can use them for dump trucks when they replace them with mraps eventually
I always thought the Buffel looked like an MRAP made out of a pile of parts from different MRAPs, but they didn't have enough parts to make a whole one.
South Africa has to be in first place for countries with the coolest army vehicles throughout history.

Looks like a poor man's Leopard 2 imitation
South Africa used to be such a cool place.
Too bad they're a crime ridden dystopia akin to Robo Cop's Detriot.
I guess it's only appropriate though that all the homegrown firearms they made look like they belong on the set of Robo Cop.

South African equipment is interesting because they had a big military budget but they didn't spend the last 70 years worrying about hordes of commie tanks storming the border, so all their equipment looks off the walls since it's designed mostly to fight guerrillas and poorly equipped armies.

South Africa was like, 30 years ahead on COIN stuff by the time NATO realized we needed MRAPs and lighter combat vehicles in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The South African and Rhodesian militaries were like a fictional army. You think the things they fielded just wouldn't have existed due to the conventional warfare ideas at the time.
I was reading a news article and I found this picture, it's pretty great to see they don't always put on unfitting camouflage for riot situations.

Just give them some P90's and they will achieve full Stargate
Also Marine(?) F-35B demonstrating its VTOL abilities

Obligatory south africa (Edit: USA, shitty copy of SA design)

made for home defence...
Still horribly confused how you make something as neat as 12 rounds of the fudd equivalent of .50BMG so unappealing
Some illustrations from a book called "Battleground Lebanon"

I wish more games made use of the late cold war aesthetic

Guy on the left looks like a '70s action hero.

I've done what the guy on the right has done, clipping the hand mic to your helmet straps. Only way to hear what's going on and still have the use of both hands. Being an RTO requires a little innovation if you don't want life to suck.
-shit wrong thread-

but their mine resistant vehicles are not shrapnel resistant...

Much rather a mine-resistant bucket than a bulletproof box for COIN. Sure, modern MRAPs are both, but if you look at what the rest of the world rolled into Iraq and Afghanistan in up to 2010ish, that thing would beat 'em all by a mile.

Hold on. That pile of shit isn't a South Africa product; Cobray (USA) just made a really shitty version of a mediocre shotgun, and went crazy.

Quite true, but then again it wasn't exactly like we were facing mines in Iraq more like anti-tank shells buried in the ground

Mine protection means V-hull, which protects from every sort of attack from below much better than a flat hull.

What I meant was south Africa has a longer history of dealing with landmines than IEDs, those things were designed solely to fight off actual land mines not the piles of explosives that we dealt with in Iraq which are substantially more powerful (if only less frequently placed)
Seems the Syrians beat the Russians to the tracksuits.

It's the same principle, hull-bottom protection is the thing that matters in both cases.

Isn't there a whole illustrated art series on uniformed soldiers in this style? I always see it under military history section of bookstores

You're right! Got confused cause they look so similar, heh
