I personally hope at some point down the line whenever the M16/M4-style weapons the US military currently uses start getting so old they're just plain outdated that we switch a bullpup for our standard issue rifle for the Army/Marines, since there's so many modern bullpup designs out there to utilize.
There's not that many ambidextrous designs though, which is something pretty damn useful for military use. Hell, I've read quotes from quite a few ADF guys saying they wished we used AR-15 type rifles instead of our AUG derivative specifically because the size and weight advantages were not worth the difficulty of getting soldiers to a level where they can competently fire from either hand.
[HD]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmYUoG9S-y4[/HD]
Never expected to see a famas of all things on here. Interesting
Never expected to see a famas of all things on here. Interesting
Why's that? There's plenty of europeans here and plenty of european weaponry being posted. Or is it because it's french?
Weird, I thought AUGs were pretty easy to convert to left handed (replace bolt, move a plastic cover)
Easy to convert yeah, but it seems a gun that you don't need to convert at all is still preferable, which I can understand.
I believe he meant that he didn't expect to see one on Forgotten Weapons.
exactly this
FAMAS seems like a better left hand gun over the AUG and Tavor since you don't even need a new bolt. You just swap the plug and the extractors places and the cheek piece and bam, lefty rifle. Shame more couldn't come in. Best bullpup design would be one similar to the ARX 100 rifle from Beretta where you don't need tools or parts swapping to go from right to left. Only need to swing the charging handle and a bullet to shift the ejection direction.

FAMAS is cool, but I can't get over the proprietary mags. Maybe if they ever make a homegrown clone of the G2, à la the PTR family of rifles.

Personally, I do hope that caseless firearms tech advances more and more to the point where we can have rifles and other weapons for our militaries that don't need a proper ejector system, perhaps save for a port for clearing jams.

It's just an incredibly simple short-stroke gas piston design where the bolt keeps recoiling past the feed area far enough for the empty case to drop out behind it.

However, yeah, downward-ejecting weapons definitely are better in many ways; unless I'm mistaken the only other "modern", commonly-used downward-ejecting bullpup would be the P90, no?
