It’s kind of an odd mix of old world medieval armor with modern day tactical equipment.
Get rid of some of the gun related stuff and this is how I imagine armies would look like if guns were never invented. Fuck platemail, try getting through a kevlar suit of armor.
We'd probably still be using plate mail's modern descendants Kevlar actually fares pretty poorly against sharp things, if I remember right. It is incredibly tough for what it is, but what it is is still just fabric
This is cool as hell, and it's interesting to see chainmail still being used roughly 2,400 years after its initial invention/usage.
It's not like it ever stopped being good at its purpose, we just stopped primarily using what it was built to counter on the battlefield. Once you reintroduce that into an environment, it makes sense to go back to what works.

[editline]21st September 2016[/editline]
Wouldn't kevlar be good against crossbows though? Something platemail struggled with.
Probably not, since bolts and arrow heads stay pretty solid when let loose. Versus lead, which gets very malleable after being fired and then making impact with its target(s). Okay, looked for some videos on this (1) (2) and maybe it'd help against certain bolt/arrowheads.
This is cool as hell, and it's interesting to see chainmail still being used roughly 2,400 years after its initial invention/usage.
they also use it for shark handling [t]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/ae/Neptunic_shark_suit_1.jpg/800px-Neptunic_shark_suit_1.jpg[/t] butchers also use it and i think loggers used to use it before they invented kevlar pants
Wouldn't kevlar be good against crossbows though? Something platemail struggled with.
I'd reckon kevlar would fare much worse. Partly because plate actually handled crossbows pretty well and partly because crossbow bolts tend to have steel heads with sharp, piercing tips

Kevlar is undoubtedly tough, but most modern soft body armor just isn't meant to deal with sharp steel, it's generally geared towards the relatively soft, blunt heads of pistol caliber bullets. If you want to stop something like a crossbow or a high velocity rifle round, steel or ceramic plate is just about the best possible option

Not really, the weight of old school armor is distributed more evenly across your body then some more modern armor where the weight is mostly on your shoulder plus some of the modern vests with the ceramic inserts weigh the same as old school armor, then if it's MOLLE you've got to put all your tacticool pouches on it as well
But wouldn't that makes them move really slow I tried on chainmail in a viking museum in iceland, shit is heavy af
This is armour made with modern alloy steels. Some of the best alloy steels have wire tensile strengths in the ~3000 MPa range where as mild steel will do ~400 MPa.
But wouldn't that makes them move really slow I tried on chainmail in a viking museum in iceland, shit is heavy af
Not really, as said the weight is more evenly spread across your body which can make movement basically the same as not wearing it, plus this is done using modern materials, we have stronger and lighter metals now which even chainmail can be made out of, its likely lighter than you think it is. Honestly mixing chainmail with modern day vests and stuff isn't a bad idea, specially when it is slashy stabby stuff you're expecting people to use, knives go through kevlar very easily for example while with chain, they just get trapped, while bullets will go through chain but not kevlar, good balance in a sense.
But wouldn't that makes them move really slow I tried on chainmail in a viking museum in iceland, shit is heavy af
Once you get used to it, chainmail and hell, full plate doesn't slow you down much
Once you get used to it, chainmail and hell, full plate doesn't slow you down much
Meanwhile, a modern rifle, plate carrier and LBV combo feels heavy and restrictive as shit. That's before you start adding crap like assault packs and rucksacks. Oh, and God help you if you've been assigned to carry the machine gun.
It's always irked me why zombie movies/games/etc don't employ chainmail. Go find some in a scuba shop, and bam, now you're impervious to being bitten.
It's always irked me why zombie movies/games/etc don't employ chainmail. Go find some in a scuba shop, and bam, now you're impervious to being bitten.
Actually just a simple hard and thick jacket and pants fully covering your arms and legs would prevent like 99% of those bites that dumb survivors in films usually get from zombies jumping out like a jack in the box. Chainmail, on the other hand, is still too heavy to run in it for long periods of time and won't save you from dozens of infected.
An interesting problem, low mobility from the weight of mail, or overheating from heavy clothing.
It's always irked me why zombie movies/games/etc don't employ chainmail. Go find some in a scuba shop, and bam, now you're impervious to being bitten.
zombies have super strength so you're going to have internal bleeding and broken bones still
zombies have super strength so you're going to have internal bleeding and broken bones still
Since when last I thought they were literally a walking decaying corpse.
Since when last I thought they were literally a walking decaying corpse.
Depends on which canon of zombie Some forms are basically just super rabies
Since when last I thought they were literally a walking decaying corpse.
considering in basically any form of zombie fiction they'll happily bite straight through thick jackets etc it's the only reasonable conclusion
Never knew SOF had tanks https://www.funker530.com/breaking-fsa-rebels/
God damn, that's one of those hella-sexy uparmoured and upgunned M60 kits! Thought it was a Merkava at first. Oh well. Another proof that the Turkish backed rebels are both morons and shitbags I guess.
