It is kind of cool, but a sad end for an original slab side magazine. I know they probably made a lot of them, but they're still a rarity compared to the ribbed ones and bakelite/plastic magazines.

What the hell is that space in the middle of the stock useful for?
What the hell is that space in the middle of the stock useful for?
I'm not entirely sure, but I think they could use that to store morphine or something lifesaving.
What the hell is that space in the middle of the stock useful for?
A cleaning kit. I don't think you'd have time to open it somehow, get the stuff out of it and so on while bleeding. It's probably made just to decrease the weight of the stock itself. I mean, wood is rather heavy. [editline]9th October 2016[/editline] Oh so i was wrong too.

I thought it was more like a skeleton stock torniquet.

The hollow space also has a spring that's wider than the base of the cleaning kit but not the top, and the whole thing is sealed by a little round plate. When the space is empty the plate is held closed by the spring, and when it's full the top of the cleaning kit is holding the plate closed and also under spring tension, so all you need to do to get it back out is push that plate back into the stock until it passes the top of the cleaning kit and it just pops right out
Yeah, a lot of older rifles have that setup. Some of the newer ones do too, the M16A2 that I'm assigned has something similar. Not my 16, but this is what it looks like:
Makes sense. I thought it was more like a skeleton stock torniquet.
Those are entirely for comfort, though. You don't have to leave a torniquet stretched out and in the sun for more than a few hours before it'd be largely useless for any torniquetting you might need to do.

Well, you can still hide chocolate in your butt.
Another Interwar tank, the Vickers Independent. A beast, 4 turrets, only one ever built. The museum I used to volunteer at (with the bayonet) has one of the only models of Leonardo Da Vinci's giant crossbow, it's bigger than a tank! Not a firearm, but... That is his entire job. To guard a Goat. :speechless: To add insult to injury the Goat Major is only a Corporal! And every goat is named Taffy. Of course! Some Swedish Armed Forces vehicles, the AMG 6x6 is only used here in Sweden while the Galten (made by BAE Systems South Africa) has seen action in Afghanistan and Mali while the Toyota Landcruiser have seen service in Sweden and abroad. Imagine joining the infantry (a rather prestigious regiment at that) just wanting to be a a normal soldier not even Rambo levels of stupidity... and your job is to look after a smelly ass goat. When an officer asks you about it you have to lie and say you've always dreamed of cleaning goat butt holes and that's the reason you signed up in the first place. Waste of training as well that guy will of done two promotional courses for the rank of corporal. (The second one takes place in the same location as SF selection the drop out rates are notoriously high along with injury) Did you know if the goat shits while on parade the "Goat Major" gets disciplinary action taken against him. Absolute fucking joke
