Any reason why deactivated guns are so expensive?
Could just go all out and get an actual working rifle for those prices
In the UK, most deactivated guns are many times the price of actual working firearms. It's fucking stupid.
It's just that the vast majority of firearms you can get as deacts are illegal and getting a firearms license for the types that aren't can be quite difficult.

I'm still amazed that this thing actually existed and was used. It's like something straight from fiction.

If I remember correctly there is a scene in Lord of War with a bunch of Vz.58's on racks standing in for AK's and it was cheaper to rent 3000 actual rifles than get blank firing props or replicas.

The great part is it drained soooo much resources, you could have had like a dozen smaller guns for the effort to run that big one
Railguns is what we need
As much as i love the idea of massive fucking guns, its the same problem as battleships. When you have concentrated so much investment in a single machine, you've given the enemy a big fat juicy target, and so the thing becomes more of a liability than an asset.
Plus the thing was hardly much use, Sure you can hit an emplacement from half a continent away, But if i remember correctly; you could only fire it about a dozen times before the rifling had been completely seared away and the barrel became useless.
Looks to me that what it was really about, was Hitler needing to prove to the world that he had the biggest gun-cock. When all those resources and laborious man-hours of hauling the thing around on its own custom-built rail, disassembling and reassembling it over weeks in a battle-situation where the reality of a rapidly shifting front-line could easily make the effort wasted. All in all a microcosm of why the Germans lost the war in engineering terms, too much fucking around.

What's the purpose of that beltbag? To fool your enemy that you have a gun, but no ammo?

Less mass/weight than a ammobox made of metal, I think.

Which makes sense. Deactivating guns costs time and money beyond the initial investment in purchasing the weapon. Why spend extra money on deactivated when the real deal works just fine as a stand in for less money?

You almost expect to see skulls plastering it and techpriests burning incense over the controls.
they could've covered the skulls part by slapping the Totenkopf symbol on it

Are there actually fabric link boxes? Afaik all MG ammo boxes are made of metal and a fabric cover is used to protect it.
They're not.
Most modern LMGs like the M249, FN MAG, and M60 use plastic or fabric belt boxes because they're much lighter.
Larger, vehicle mounted or crew-served MGs like the M2 or DSHK use metal boxes because they don't exactly need to care about weight and can generally hold more rounds.

I wouldnt exactly call the MAG an LMG cause its a heavy and unwieldy bastard. We still use larger ammo boxes carried in a patrol backpack or a MOLLE belt carrier pouch, but then again it depends on the country and force.
It was a poor example for what I was trying to say there, but it's a prime example for having lightweight cloth mags on machine guns. The MAG is already a pain in the ass to lug around without having a big heavy metal box fastened to it.
I know extra ammo is or at least was previously carried in metal ammo cans by US and British troops using the FN MAG/M240, but the container attached directly to the gun for holding the belt is pretty much always a cloth sack these days. It's lightweight and doesn't really get in the way.

In a lot of Afghanistan combat videos, M240 gunners just use a loose belts. The cloth "nutsack" only holds 50 rounds

Also "gangsta grips" seem to be somewhat common

It's a lot easier to maneuver the 20+ lb gun that way, keep the belt over their arm, and keep firing, but also because a vert grip on the bottom would not be easy to use, especially since the gun ejects brass downwards.

I don't think they all just ditch the nutsack. The nutsack is designed to be a "First Contact" ammunition source. The idea being that you're rucking on patrol for hours or days with the nucksack for ease of hauling the thing around but as soon as you contact with an enemy you blow through the 50 rounds, than you ditch the sack and move onto belts carried on your person or by squadmates to use during the actual firefight.

KABARtana
I recall once seeing a machete version of a breacher bar. Anyone got the pic? I think it was lodged in a log stump or something.
