I dunno, Halo is pretty good about having plausible military design but it still commits many of the same offenses as softer sci-fi. The design of the armor, especially those shoulder pads, is clearly for looks over functionality considering it provides basically no coverage but would be a pain in the ass for going through doorways and entering/exiting vehicles. And where's the gear? Is he dropping with just his rifle and no additional equipment? And why black of all colors, the worst possible choice for blending in to any environment? My big issues with most sci-fi uniforms are the inconsistent armor coverage, total lack of LBE, and no camo or other visual disruption. Current combat load for soldiers varies from 50lbs to 100lbs of just equipment. Developments in powered armor/exoskeletons are primarily designed to increase the ability of a soldier to carry gear, like the Lockheed prototype. And for an ODST, whose mission is to operate independently of the conventional logistical chain, they'd probably follow the paratrooper model and carry as much individual equipment as possible. For realism my vote would probably go to the Marine uniform in Space: Above And Beyond, a short-lived TV series from the late 90s. While some parts of its premise were implausible (ground-pounding Marines doubling as fighter pilots, what?), they did a good job with the infantry uniform design. They've got low-profile body armor providing full coverage to the upper torso, load-bearing harnesses, integral cameras, comms, and other electronics, and pouches for ammunition and equipment. In episodes where they're deployed to airless planets like Mars they wear the flight helmet-styled visors in the first picture (with backpack oxygen tanks no less, eliminating the 'where's the air stored?' question most sci-fi armor elicits), in other episodes they use PASGTs with helmet cams. For night missions they use NVGs, for LRRP they carry ALICE packs, for operations in terrestrial environments they wear camouflage. So basically 20th-century gear, but with more body armor and integration with electronics, and specialization of equipment for the operating environment. That seems to be pretty much the trend over the past century so I think it seems a pretty safe projection.
Space Above and Beyond is an awesome show and if you like sci-fi and are reading this post, go watch it - now. I had to double-take at this cos it's so fucking obscure I wouldn't have expected anyone else on this forum to have seen it - I only ever found out about it because of an unreleased Homeworld 2 mod that I happened to glance. I really wish it were more popular, it rivals Battlestar Galactica in my eyes. Aside from the awkward guns (Every time they're prone, they don't seem to be able to level it properly because of that fucked up stock) I love SAAB's portrayal of future military tech - It's basically "What if we had a space military today?" and I agree that in reality it probably wouldn't be far removed.
in halo the uniforms are what they are because occasionally soldiers deal with projectile weapons, but the armor is useless against covenant plasma weapons, at least in the books, in the games people can take a bunch of hits on everything but heroic and legendary stargate had the same problem actually, the standard kevlar wasn't really good against anything the goa'uld used, it wasn't till later in the series partly because of needing a plot device, partly because science, they started making big armor plates that are resistant to staff weapons
Wouldn't be surprised either way. Most of the new weapon acquisitions and proposals like the Modular Handgun System and the M110 have a requirement that the gun come in Tan or some kind of Flat Dark Earth like color. Also, H&K are collaborating on the XM25's development and they've been painting all of their new weapons a special baby poop brown. I think the last one might be a VBIED, if those are artillery shells on the back.
I think the last one might be a VBIED, if those are artillery shells on the back.
Or some kind of ammunition transport for artillery pieces, they don't exactly have many heavy trucks to do that and the Syrian forces are fairly mobile
Given how they've armored the cab and put absolutely no armor on the shells, I highly doubt it. It makes no sense as an ammo transport and only marginally more sense if it's a VBIED.

At some point I think they put a 20mm machine gun on the thing.
I will never understand why the secondary fire is called buckshot.
Because valve doesn't have a clue how real weapons work. Take a look at the M4 animations in counter-strike source for example. They couldn't have gotten a single thing more wrong. Not only do they put the ejection port on the wrong side, but they also made the dust cover open and close on every shot and they have the player pull on the forward assist instead of the charging handle. (skip to 2:54) Also, where are you getting that the secondary fire is called buckshot? I never saw that in hl2 before.
Not only do they put the ejection port on the wrong side
This one is because it was animated left-handed.
The A4 Skyhawk is a pretty cool aircraft. Super cheap for a jet fighter jet still pretty capable. [thumb]https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b1/A-4F_VA-55_CVA-19_1972.JPEG[/thumb] Each unit costs about $860,000. Also had an interesting mechanism in the works for thermal protection of the pilot during nuclear werapons delivery.
I was curious so I looked up some more info about the protective shield thing, I found this little anecdote:
The thermal shield when lowered looked like the roll-down part of a roll-top desk. The idea was to block the harmful effects of a nuclear blast. So, it completely blocked out the outside view from inside the cockpit. Theoretically, the plane would not suffer any harmful effects from a thermonuclear blast unless the plane was actually in the blast (in that case it would not matter very much anyway). I never knew anyone who pulled down the buggy top (among us drivers that was what it was called). The reason was that some poor pilot was flying over the Sierra Nevada Range out west and he decided to see what it would be like with the buggy top down while airborne. Murphy's law being what it is, the damn top would not retract. He tried everything he could think of, to no avail. Swallowing his pride, he called base to try for some help. Again, after the laughter subsided among his compatriots, he still could not get it to retract. He obviously was completely flying on instruments (it was pitch black dark without interior lights on). The final result was that the idea came to pass to blow the canopy and land without it. One last piece of info from the parachute riggers squashed that idea. The buggy top is not attached to the canopy, it is part of the interior structure of the cockpit and can not be blown. So, he was vectored to a desert part of Nevada and flew in circles until rescue choppers could get to the scene of a controlled ejection. He performed the ejection to perfection (the only part of this whole fiasco that turned out right) and made a nylon let-down. Now you know why no pilot ever messed with the buggy-top after that.
I can't even begin to imagine how flying a jet with that thing down would feel. Since it's halloween soon, how about some weapons dressed up as other weapons? Example: http://left4dead.wikia.com/wiki/Combat_Shotgun Actually works semi-automatic like it should with live shells and you don't have any silly doubleshot non-sense.
That sounds like an incredibly awful way to do that. Are you sure that's not an ejection capsule?
Its supposed to block the intense light from a nuclear blast, which can burn you if you are close enough.
