AC-130s are cool as shit and pretty much personify American air doctrine, but aren't they kinda useless against an enemy with actual AA?
they're probably better off than most other CAS airplanes because they are capable of flying higher and pulling tight manuvers as well as having more sophisticated countermeasures
plus if you do manage to pop off a missile at it, they probably can track your position and punt a cannon round your way
They also usually fly at night, so if you don't have radar you won't see it coming

Yeah, the AC130 got raped by AA guns in Vietnam. They lost something like eight in the war out of 20 something aircraft.
I believe they're jammed with as much ECM gear as they can fit without losing guns, or are often supported by other ECM planes.
I know that somehow they and the Spooky functioned in Vietnam off the Ho Chi Minh trail, and that had the most AAA of anywhere on Earth at the time.
Most ECM is basically lighting yourself up so bright that no one else can be seen.

Not really, they only fly at 10kft or something on a combat mission.

better than an a-10 or a helicopter though, and especially better than the old ww2 piston fighter aircraft they used in vietnam as CAS
gunship development in vietnam was pretty haphazard, i mean i've walked through the airforce museum where they have some of the only surviving examples and in the span of like 10 years they went through at least half a dozen different aircraft in "gunship" configurations before they settled on the ac130 and even then they had several revisions of that during the conflict.
[editline]18th May 2016[/editline]
they used c-47 cargo planes and c-119 boxcars as gunships along side the c-130, both of which were pretty defenseless against any AA fire

Speaking of planes from the Vietnam-era, some more details about the OV-10G+ Bronco's deployment in Iraq/Syria have come out. They were using it to do field tests of the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System which is basically turns Hydra rockets into laser guided missiles. Apparently it is extremely accurate, being able to take out people in windows, doorways, overhangs, and dense cover as if it were a flying sniper.
They're still not sure whether they're going to procure more of them beyond this limited test or just modify A-29 Super Tucanos in a similar way

Wouldn't they just qualify fast jets and helicopters to carry the APKWS?
We talking about Vietnam era airplanes?

The amount of explosives this fucker could take with it in the sky is absurd, and the engine was so powerfull that giving it full throttle when taking off from the runway could make it spin around on the spot.
It was also pretty reliable and could take a severe beating.

Ooh exciting, I just finished reading a book about an OV-10 pilot who flew Prairie Fire Missions in Vietnam, and he was full of nothing but praise for the Bronco.
It would be nice to see it make a comeback.

The airflow of those exhaust streaks is just beautiful.
I won't be surprised if piston-engine aircraft make a comeback in the modern military arsenal, simply because they're more economical to fly. When you got 100% air superiority already and 95% safety from serious ground fire, flying jets is just a waste when you can do the same job for a third the cost and maintenance time. Save the jet airframe flight hours for when you need 'em.
I'm doubtful it will be piston engines, rather I expect turboprops.

Sure, that too. Propeller driven, in any case.

Doesnt pretty much every single prop fighter do this?

It's not like everyone can afford jets, the US can but many of the countries we operate in cant

I never understood what the hell went on in the mind of whoever designed that thing. I don't think this feels natural to shoot:

The US can still be interested in a low-cost alternative to do loitering CAS. Just because you have the money to burn, doesn't mean you should burn those money. Or, in a modern political system it actually does if you wanna keep being funded, but if you can save the money in one place, you can burn 'em even harder in a different place.
Why the fuck is there a rail on the grip?

Flashlight mount without making it more front heavy?
Doesnt pretty much every single prop fighter do this?
Yes and no. Piston-engine aircrafts will create sideways momentum, due to the propeller, this is more significant on aircrafts with more than one engine, where one will be dubbed the Critical Engine.
http://www.skybrary.aero/index.php/Critical_Engine
It is however, a rather few aicraft that will outright do donuts on the runway the exact second you hammer the throttle all the way down.

Retro? It was in total recall I think (the Arnold one)
Retro? It was in total recall I think (the Arnold one)
The original Total Recall was made 9 years before the PAW-20 so I'm gonna say no.
Only movies it's been in are District 9 and Chappie AFAIK.
