Got some nice shots in the sunny weather today. Still applying more lacquer.
Thanks Hypno. Any other general advice?
There's not a whole lot of general advice I can give. if it's his first one, he is going to need volumes of specific advice.
The best piece of general advice I can give would be that he carefully analyze any guitars he already has, and try and replicate every aspect of them as best he can.

Okay, but it'll be 25.5" scale.
Will need some heavy-ass strings :o
That red in the light is gorgeous :buddy:
Hardware and fretboard arrived today. The fretboards always come with deep scratches from the radius-ing. So sanded it up and polished it.

Just to give you an idea.

It looks amazing, glad you went with the ebony fretboard.
Hard to believe stuff like that comes out of a tree.
nice ebony.
I love ebony - especially when it's pure black!
Most "pure" black ebony has been dyed. This piece I have is mostly black, but it's got some beige stripes running under it's skin (figuratively).
No offense to anybody, but I find that sort of dumb. A bunch of horridly underpaid African loggers have to spend hours cutting down one of those monster trees in some endangered jungle, and then the guitar company just slaps black dye over it. :raise:
I suppose if it's the brownish south-east Asian ebony, dye would make sense, but stewmac actually recommends putting black dye over this beautiful Madagascar ebony. It's like putting gold paint over gold.
i think it would've looked nicer with a maple fretboard
I'm kinda digging this, cept the black pickguard with ebony fretboard just seem to stand out really weird against the beautiful wood finish
Well that's kind of the idea. It's called contrast.
I like it the way hypno made it...
i think it would've looked nicer with a maple fretboard
I think it probably would have been about the same in the opposite way. I've already got a guitar with a maple fretboard, though. Besides, the neck is going to be padauk, so that probably wouldn't work out because the padauk would rape it. I've seen some nice machine made padauk necks w/ maple fretboards, but I'll be doing a lot of hand sanding, so the bright red sawdust would bleed into the maple and it'll look pretty shitty.
The ebony works well the black pickguard, so far I think this is your nicest looking guitar. But it seems to me like the upper horn is kind of bulky and the curves on the lower horn aren't overly smooth? Maybe it's just me.
I had to go easy on the top horn because I don't have a spindle sander. Probably left a tiny bit extra on it. The lower horn is identical to a regular strat.
agh, you broke my planned automerge

Gotta do some cutting on the actual pickgaurd so the kahler will fit. May have to do a bit more work inside the body cavity so everything is lined up. One of the benifits of the kahler is that the saddles are adjustable on all axises, which will come in handy getting the polepices, neck, and bridge alligned.
I love these threads :)
I also love the natural wood look, but like others said you should experiments with paints on your next one.

I'm aware. Just voicing a mild, mild criticism, if you can even call it that.
I don't much like your tone sir :colbert:
I still think painting this one would be the best choice aesthetically.

:aaaaa:
I long for the day when I can slap people through my monitor. Who in god's name would ever paint over red juniper.

Everyone apart from you, apparently.

Oh please god no, just get longer pieces of wood and laminate them man.
And of course carbon fibre reinforcement rods.
And why is it always the same fender headstock? It's so unimaginative
Everyone apart from you, apparently.
Thank you.
Hypno, you don't want all your guitars to be varnished wood, it's too samey. Keep your red juniper showing, but keep the painting in your mind as well

Because it looks good and it's functional?
I can't think of a better headstock.
Every headstock is functional, and in my opinion it is the most boring headstock I've ever had the misfortune to gaze upon.
