These were not acts of violence focused towards other trolls. A human being going hunting doesn't make him feel hate, and the one time Kanaya used her chainsaw on a troll, she seems reluctant and benign, not malevolent.

This bugs me.
"Romance" comes from the old equivalent of Tom Clancy books for shit done by knights and heroes and such and only came to have a relationship context as more and more people focused on the relationships as a reason for and main event of a knight's knightly knightquesting. Hell, the name tells you, it was written in roman because it was too smutty and armchair adventurer for latin.
So "romance", when not strictly referring to ye olde escape fictione, refers to the derived "dude courts girl" relationship. Or the associated and fruity as hell rage-against-der-machinae emo bullshit philosophy. But really regardless of what you're drawing from it, pretty much nothing the trolls do fits any decent definition of "romantic." Even abstracted to "shit that involves fucking", it still doesn't cover the diamond stuff. Or unrequited chainsaw lesbianism.

What the fuck is finely drawn on the faces? It lacks any higher detail, it's just crude lines forming giant eyes with huge pupils and and the fugly color smears instead of nose and on cheeks.
