They are an important part of the story, and most of the best lines come from them.
If you skip the chatlogs you'll only be robbing yourself of most of the humor and plot.
At first when I started reading Homestuck, i'd skip the chatlogs because at the time they were 'boring' to me.
then I went back and reread them, I understood most of the stuff that happened in the next pages because of them :L

I cannot bring myself to read 5 pages worth of text written in their various styles and mannerisms. I just can't. I was fine with all the shit happening in the story until he switched to the trolls POV. Now its really a clusterfuck.

There's some kind of script or something that changes the troll text to be easy to read.
