At first I thought that if you died before waking up, you never woke up, but then Vriska's dreamself still woke up after she was killed by Aradia. I'm still not sure how this works.
I think the dream selves act as extra lives or something.

I'm pretty sure that this is the only explanation that accounts for all the differences between what happened after John and Vriska died.
