really getting into this now... I think so far the best blade I've used is: So smooth even if I'm not putting the effort in.. one thing I find is if the lather is better then you get a way better shave. but still have about 7 blades to try.
I've had some good shaves with a Persona platinum blue, I was a bit disappointed with Derby blades, only got one good shave out of it. A good pre-shave routine is helping me a lot, after hot water I put some regular soap on my face for a couple of minutes, wash off then rub in some hair conditioner before applying a thick lather, reduces the razor burn a lot which lets me get a closer shave. I've not tried the Super Max blades yet, I have a regular cheap one and a blue diamond.
i find if you use derby a certain way they work really well. i wouldn't use them if i have about 4days growth though... they're hopeless for aggressive shaves. But they're the smoothest goddamn blade i've ever used, and for that reason, they work seriously well for against the grain shaving no bs. [editline]17th August 2015[/editline] i still ain't mastered my pre-shave yet... I bought this facial scrub thingamajig but maybe soap or oil would work better. [editline]17th August 2015[/editline] also furthermore, I keep emphasizing how much I'm saving but noone believes me: http://groceries.asda.com/asda-webstore/landing/home.shtml#/product/910000799267?&cmpid=ppc-_-ghs-_-pla-dsk-_-google-_- what is THIS crap... 14 quid for 8 blades... and each cartridge barely lasts 4 shaves if not 5. And then you throw em away.
As far as I understand it hot water and a alkaline soap makes the hair soft by damaging the outer layer causing it to swell up, oil and such provides extra glide which might be good if your soap isn't very slick, I've tried plain old sunflower oil and it definitely makes the shave smoother, hair conditioner has pretty much the same effect and smells nicer. I just had a shave with a Super Max Blue Diamond, it isn't what I'd call a sharp blade but it still does a good job particularly against the grain, I would pretty much consider it a slightly sharper and more durable alternative to a derby, although it doesn't quite have the initial cutting power of the derby, got me almost a BSS shave so I'm happy. I bought a cheap straight razor off ebay which I'm going to try get sharp, I got 100/220 and 3000/8000 grit water stones, my first attempt at sharpening sort of worked but it isn't sharp enough to shave with yet, probably need to redo the bevel.
i buy dorco 6 blade cartridges each cartridge lasts me about a month of nearly every day shaving
only a dork would shave 30 times with a single blade just kidding. :v: but let me ask you a personal question, does shaving with a cartridge deliver the best shave of your life so far each time you shave?
I can get the same out of a cartridge but I wouldn't exactly call it comfortable, after about the 3rd shave you have to start really pulling it along, what I love about DE razors is you always use razor sharp blades so it just glides through the hair even a weeks growth, I've also never got a really close shave out of cartridges no matter how many passes I do. Also $25 can get you enough blades for 2 years of shaving which is pretty amazing considering in the same period you'd spend around $600 on cartridges, that's a lot of money to be saved. Edit My math is bad, you'd spend $100.
For me, it's about doing it as quickly as possible, I don't care if it itches Look at this post I made a couple of days ago
Beat my shaving record Perfect smooth shave, including against the grain, in 1:06
I did miss a few small spots here and there, but what the hell, you can't have everything I use a 3- or 4- or 5-blade cartridge razor (I don't remember how many blades because I'm drunk)
razor burn is the worst feeling... why people think it's ok is beyond me. also ingrown hairs... why..
my barber does neck shaves with a straight i really don't find it that much better than a cartridge
I meant a good start to finish with hot towel that is worth paying for. cartridge razors clog up and tug too, they're too dull for a irritation free shave.. if they actually work fine for you then that's fair enough, I've just never enjoyed shaving until I used proper blades.
I meant a good start to finish with hot towel that is worth paying for. cartridge razors clog up and tug too, they don't seem too dull for you?
the cartridge the day i replace it tugs just as little as the first day which is to say not at all
I've been huge on wetshaving, if you remembered the older shave thead I made. I'll still use a slant DE with feathers once in a while, but I really like the Dorco Pace 3. Cartridge razors with more than 3 blades will irritate my skin, 3 bladed cartridges don't irriate me though and provide what seems as close of a shave. The pace 3 is just so cheap, convenient, and close shaving that I don't really use anything else most of the time. If I haven't shaved in awhile, then I'll take out the DE with feathers as that seems to cut through anything with no pull or tug.
omg alum is literally the greatest... I generally get itchy on my neck area if I haven't shaved in a couple days, but since using an alum block i don't have to mess around with all these moisturizers.
shaving soap > cream imo. Although I have bought a nice ST James London cream which was £15 a tub, but usually if I lather with soap it's a really smooth/ non-irritating shave. [editline]20th August 2015[/editline] plus soaps last months!
I got 3 sticks of Arko for like £1 each from Amazon, barely used any yet and it makes a great lather.
arko is basic, clean and quality and I got my stick for free lol I do personally find it slightly drying but it's much better than shitty gel/foam.
I recently shaved my beard off. Every time I look in the mirror I feel weird. Its as if my face has mutated under the beard.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/QwyhSTu.jpg[/t] I think I'm in love with Astra Superior Platinum blades, very similar to Persona Platinum Blue but slightly sharper I think, gave me the least razor burn of any blade I've tried thus far. Very cheap as well, £7.90 for 100 on Amazon UK
sux how I spent all that effort getting a close shave then the very next night i've got sandpaper skin :< good thing i now enjoy shaving tho because this is rly ticking me off!
Yeah, my face starts feeling rough again after around 8 hours, I'm going to try daily shaving now that I'm getting much less irritation. Might get some Taylor's coconut or sandalwood shaving cream to add some variety. just booked in a patient in A&E who cut himself shaving.. I advised to use alum when he shaves :) however I then found out he needed the slice glued and dressed lol... don't be too aggressive with that razor!!!
I had a shave with a PolSilver Super Iridium today, very nice blade that I found to be quite similar to the Astra SP. in fact I find it quite hard to compare the two, perhaps slightly more aggressive but just as smooth. I managed to finally get a razor edge on my cheap straight razor after making a new bevel but it seems to blunt very rapidly though, probably shit steel I only paid like £3 for it, still it's good practice so I don't ruin a good straight razor.
