Back in the day, OIFY said that you would get free gold membership by posting: proboards proboards proboards proboards proboards proboards proboards proboards U+[your user ID] The thing was, proboards was not an acceptable word by smartness standards, so you would lose 5000 smartness in a single post, which was grounds for insta-perma-ban back in those days. this account was actually a throwaway to test it. For some reason I wasn't banned even though smartness was still around.

This lead to a huge wave of people signing up and immediately upgrading to gold. People who were pissed that they didn't get a key and/or got banned in the process of trying to get one started issuing payment disputes/chargebacks. Some people who actually did get a key did the same, because screw FP, they got their key and they were "clever".
