Every film I've seen written by Charlie Kaufman. That's 'Being John Malkovich', 'Adaptation.' and 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'. Eternal Sunshine did make quite a bit in the box office, but it has become a cult film (cult just means that the film has developed a small but exceptionally devoted fan-base.)
man I fucking love Adaptation
Starship Troopers.
Say what you want, not a whole lot of people know about it.

The Scy Fy channel puts on movies but that doesn't mean they're popular.
no i mean it's on our mainstream public channels a lot
[editline]12:30AM[/editline]
plus, seriously? everyone knows (and loves) starship troopers
Yeah, totally, it honestly couldn't be the fact that it accomplishes the theories its based on very well, the fact that even the smallest thing in the movie turns into a major plot detail and pulls it off remarkably well, couldn't be how it represents several different psychological phenomena.
It's definitely because of ignorant teenagers that this is popular.
So, you've just derailed the argument from it being a cult film to the reason why it's a "good" movie (I used the term lightly). I've bolded the point in your argument that you break your first argument, by the way.
So now that you've admitted it isn't a cult film, let's tackle the plot. It's basically Back to the Future wrapped up in an emo protagonist. It's been done before, except this time around it's being served to a different audience. As for the "smallest thing in the movie turn[ing] into a major plot detail," any film that doesn't accomplish that naturally would have countless errors and hiccups. It's a constant expectation for there to be no plot holes in filmmaking. Say it didn't pull those off? You would criticize it for things that should be there. There isn't a point in showering it with appraise for accomplishing something that is a prerequisite of all films. As for the psychological phenomena, that's all fair and well. Many movies play with the ideas of the human mind, and this film is no different from those. It's nothing special, and as you've said, popular enough to not be cult.
I wish Rush Hour 2 was a cult film...

I'll start a cult for it.

oh not that type of cult
The only movies I ever watch multiple times seem to be cult films, I've never really seen any other movies more than once.
The Orphanage (if it counts), fantastic horror film yet not many people have seen it.
Also The Who's film Tommy, fantastic music but anyone outside the fan base hasn't seen it.
13th Floor, very confusing.
ExitenZ, loads of big actors in and has a few good plot twists.
The Orphanage is hardly a horror film, but it is good.

MST3K is what made it a cult film.

I was introduced to this movie by the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game series. :3:
EDIT: What the flying fuck?!

Are you sure you are talking about the right film? Is a horror film without a doubt. Found it far scarier than The Ring and people class that as a horror.
Ed Wood, The Warriors, Donnie Darko and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Those are as good as they get.

Yes I'm talking about that movie. Maybe I'm just hard to scare?

I just watched that movie and all I can say is that it's my new definition of a cult movie. Oh and that it's great.

Can't believe this wasn't posted yet.
blade runner is insanely famous/popular and has no single devoted but small fanbase, everybody loves it
holy shit, i can't believe no one has posted this yet:

Also, Blade Runner is still very much a cult film (albeit it has grown in considerable size since its initial release, it performed poorly at the box office, even with the fact that it had Harrison Ford, most people discovered him through SW or IJ). Surprisingly there are a lot of people I know who haven't seen it.
I didn't forget you Dude. Most cult films have a deeper thing behind them, I didn't really like TBL on my first watch but I've grown to love it. As ridiculous as Fear and Loathing it was a fun watch and it's based on a guys biography, so true events there.

Hey dipshit
A CULT FILM IS A FILM THAT HAS MET LITTLE TO NO CRITICAL ACCLAIM OR RECOGNITION, AND HAS A SMALL FANBASE
Not sure if you guys would count this as a cult film, but this pretty much failed in general, and the Nostalgia Critic gave a pretty bad review of it (hell, he actually reviewed it). Yes, I am talking about:

I know it hasn't really got a devoted fanbase, but for some reason I like it.
